Why should I pick him?

Sam Jacobs has shown season after season that he can get the job done for Fantasy teams, and I can’t see why this season will be any different. Jacobs has to be one of the most reliable rucks going having played more than 19 games a season since 2011, offering us a Ruck who should play every game of the season.

Score wise Jacobs has averaged more than 90 for the past four season, with last seasons average of 99 being his best yet. Whilst he lacks an ability to get really high scores on a regular basis, with only one score above 120 and two scores above 110, the ‘Sauce’ has shown an ability to put out decent scores throughout seasons, if be it on an irregular basis.

One of the biggest upsides to Jacobs this season is the likelihood that he will play predominant ruck time. Other fantasy relevant ruckman like Stefan Martin and Brodie Grundy will most likely spend time in the forward pocket, leading to a decrease in their averages, and other than Kreuzer no other ruckman performed last season.

Currently sitting in only 6% of teams Jacobs is also a relatively unique option this season as players look to take advantage of Nic Naitanui and Max Gawn’s decreased prices, but if these two fail to perform, those holding Jacobs could be in for a great season.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

One issue I have always had with the big man is his ability to burn on occasions, and with the ability to so,  it could lead to a run of low scores for short spells of time. Last season he started the season with an abysmal 65, in 2016 he started with a 78, and in 2015, 88. These are not good numbers to start the season. He also had a four game spell where he failed to score 100 coming just after his bye round, where Jenkins appeared to get extra time in the ruck, and also perhaps showing Jacobs doesn’t benefit from time off.

The question will be, as Jacobs gets older do Adelaide perhaps rest him for greater periods in the game. I can’t see this being a case, but as with fantasy football you never know!

Deck of DT Rating.

QUEEN – I considered making Jacobs a King, but he is yet to average more than 100 in a season, and after his history of slow starts I couldn’t justify doing so.

As ruck options come though Jacobs is one of the best and most reliable. I fully expect Stefan Martin and Brodie Grundy’s scores to decrease this year, and as such Jacobs presents himself as one of the most solid options. Jacobs won’t score as much as Kreuzer, but will be one of the most consistent options going forward rewarding owners with scores around the 100 mark each round, and sitting quite comfortably as one of the top five rucks of the competition.

I predict another season of an average in the high 90s by Jacobs.

As you read this, is Sam Jacobs currently in your team?

With People putting a line through Nic Nat, and question marks over Grundy and Stef rucking solo, Jacobs will be quite popular. Out of him and Kreuzer for me. Just feel a little uneasy paying 740k for Kreuzer, last year was his only real premo year. Sauce has averaged in the 90’s for quite a while now

Jacobs will be affected by o’reilly return from good form in the two’s Witts will be affected by Tom nicolls return from Injury. No ruckman is safe this year. I’m starting with Tom Boyd and also have menegola captain who should achieve 115+ this year. Chow

O’Reilly ain’t getting a game lol. Neither is Nicholls if Witts is in good form. Tom Boyd is straight trash and Menegola isn’t anywhere near Captain-worthy. Ciao.

Sorry I meant Andy otten. Heard he’s carving up on the track and looking for more time in the ruck

not much evidence for my big call – but what about Darcy ? Pretty good average for a kid of 8 games, and with Sandi on the outer, will Darcy produce numbers in the 90-110 range. thoughts all ?

Hasn’t played a full game with Sandi (r15 Sandi went down early) so we don’t know how he’ll score as a back up (history suggests back up rucks aren’t worth it), or whether or not he’ll play. If Sandi goes down I’ll likely be picking him, but as of right now. No.

Considering Darcy has had an injury interrupted preseason (calf tear) i would avoid, by all reports sandi is at full heath atm too. Next year will be Darcys year when old man sandi hands up his size 18 boots

Love the articles guys always a great read!! Just one minor quarrel: Can we do some more mid-range players that have a potential upside? Players such as Redden and Sicily finished the year strongly but also have reasons not to pick them (24 from Sicily yuck!!). I don’t think anyone ever doubted Jacobs would go 95+ this year so it seems kind of like a wasted card. Could just be my opinion and I’ll be reading every article anyways so keep up the good work!!

Pretty ballsy because he’s just got his average up to where he had it all the way back in 2012. Hope it works for you.

i cant see why he cant average that. dominated ruck in the intra and slimmed down so he can run more

He’ll do well if Tim O’Brien can lock down the support role. Without O’Brien there’s every chance Ceglar or Pittonet come in as second ruck, and McEvoy is a much better Fwd than they are. I can see Pittonet being given a couple of games at least for his development anyway.

Currently got Ryder think with Trengrove and Lobbe gone there is some value left in him

Between Jacobs and Nankervis for me. Jacobs is safer, Nankervis has upside. Is there any chance Hampson plays with Nank?

Any love for Zac Smith. Averaged 84 for 2017 with some really poor scores, however, after being dropped established himself as No. 1 ruckman at Geelong. Last 5 rostered games were 110 – 96 – 75 – 89 – 100 and finals were 103 – 91 – and 68 against Jacobs. Enters his 3rd year with Cats is now 28 years of age with 100 games under his belt. Think he can push to mid 90s which appears to be good enough for ruck 2 this year.

For 700k on a average 99 pass. I am going cheaper rucks. Gawn and ryder. Atm but think i can save more money in rucks and splash else where

at the end of the day, its pretty hard to go pasat Nic Nac at that price… even if he averages 80 for 6 rounds, he’ll make $ and by round six we will all know whether to hold or trade him.

Nic nat wont average 80. Lycett in team. Nicnats not fit and will be rested by round 2 game. Pass

There is a ruck conundrum every year and the top 2 at years end are rarely the names everyone thinks will be.

I’ll likely be passing on Jacobs, I dont see enough upside to him. You will be paying top dollar for a guy who has never averaged 100 and not likely to get there this year either.
