Geelong AFL Fantasy Classic Prices 2018

Prices, positions & tips for the Cats.

Despite a Top 4 finish Geelong averaged 384.4 Disposals (Rank 10) & 1616.6 fantasy team points (Rank 9) in 2017, the Cats recorded 400+ Disposals in 6 games (Melbourne 13) including only 1 from their final 7 games of the H&A season. Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan & Joel Selwood were the only players to average 25.0 or more Disposals in 2017 (Incl. Finals), Gary Ablett returns to Geelong in 2018 having averaged 33.0 Disposals in his final year at Gold Coast.

With the addition of Ablett the Cats are likely to increase their Disposal average in 2018, if not then the distribution of fantasy points may be uncertain for other top tier players such as Dangerfield, Duncan & J.Selwood.

2018 Potential Targets:

Gary Ablett MID $837K

There is no disputing the fantasy talent of Ablett, in his last year at Gold Coast he averaged 118.8pts recording 30 Disposals or more in 71.4% of games. Ablett scored 100pts or more in 78.6% of games and 120pts or more in 42.9% of games, he scored 150pts or more in 3 games including s season high 162pts against Nth Melbourne in Round 6. Longevity will be a concern for fantasy coaches in determining whether to take Ablett or not, since the beginning of 2014 he only played in 55.7% of games at Gold Coast. If you plan on having excellent bench cover this season then Ablett is definitely worth considering.

Patrick Dangerfield MID $849K

Dangerfield put together another outstanding year averaging 120.5pts in the 2017 H&A season, he scored 100pts or more in 83.3% of games & 120pts or more in 50.0% of games (Incl. Finals). Dangerfield kicked at least 1 Goal in 20 of 24 games last season, when he kicked 3 Goals or more he averaged 132.7pts per game. Dangerfield should be a Round 1 target or an upgrade target early in the year, pairing he and Ablett in the same team should also be a consideration.

Joel Selwood MID $670K

Selwood does represent value based on his price tag to begin 2018, he averaged 94.0pts last season which included an average of 70.7pts between Rounds 13-23. The low 2nd half of the year average included 2pts after being concussed early in Round 14 and 64pts after injuring his ankle in Round 20 subsequently missing the final 3 games of the H&A season, many would not remember the 110.6 average Selwood delivered between Rounds 1-11. Selwood could thrive as 3rd banana at the Cats, imagine opposition teams letting both Dangerfield & Ablett loose, if not then Selwood scores well.

Mitch Duncan MID $793K

Duncan smashed out a PB (Personal Best) averaging 112.6pts during the 2017 H&A season, he also averaged 133.7pts in the Finals for Geelong. Duncan scored 100pts or more in 70.8% of games & 120pts or more in 33.3% of games last season (Incl. Finals), he scored a season high 169pts against the Bulldogs in Round 9. The addition of Ablett does put up an initial red flag for Duncan having averaged more than 100.0pts only once in his career (2017), more research is needed throughout the JLT Series to witness any impact on his points per minute.

Tim Kelly MID $224K

Motlop moves out of Geelong and Kelly moves in, the talented WA product is sure to be utilised by Geelong this season. “Tim Kelly is a bit older but we think he could help us, if not straight away, but pretty early in his tenure at Geelong” Chris Scott. If Kelly is named in Round 1, just click on the + button.

Am I the only one considering the possibility of starting Danger, Ablett AND Duncan?? It used to be everyone wanted the ABC (Ablett, Bartel, Corey)… which should have been ABCC and included the great Chappy… but I have a funny feeling everyone might wanna go nuts at the start of the year with ADD (Ablett, Danger, Duncan). Could pay off BIG TIME! quite a good draw at the start of the year as well!

      Any1 considering Jelwood

I am after seeing his price.

Had 3 games where his TOG was limited for one reason or another

        2 – 2% time on ground
        113 – 67%
        64 – 63%

These have a greater impact on his average (and therefore price) when he misses games also (last 3).

There are so many “value” players in the $600k to $740k price range that I am considering a different strategy this year and not starting with the likes of Mitchell and Dangerfield etc.

They may score more points but I don’t see their price increasing much. The price fluctuations are going to be a lot greater this year with a higher magic number.

I think it is also going to be harder to get a higher number of guns to start with, given the pricing (despite increased salary cap).
Players will be scrambling like mad if not many rookies get a call up in round 1.

I’m going Jelwood for much the same reasons.

Jelwood priced at 94, take out the 2 and his average goes up to 101, also the limited TOG in the other games. He’s a 105 premo, so he’s 10 points under priced for sure. However he isn’t a top 8 mid and he’ll get tagged for those annoying 50’s and 60’s, not sure I can do it

Yeah that’s a big fat NEG….. I’ve locked menegola in from day one. Consistent , plenty of mid time to come and guaranteed 115+ this year

I won’t be starting with Menegola. He will see less mid time in my opinion, with the arrival of Ablett. Scott Selwood only played 11 games last year also.

I will watch and see how it plays out in the early rounds.

I had him in a draft league last year, so watched him closely.

Can’t see 115+, and needs to improve his goal kicking.

Keen to hear some thoughts about Kolodjashnij and his potential to play on a wing/Hb. At 400k is he worth a Def spot?
