The Sunday (Monday) Knee-Jerk – Round 11

The byes have arrived! We all thought this was going to be cataclysmic. A seismic event off the Richter scale. And for those unlucky ones, it was. Some may have even been placed in restraints as to halt them from flying all the way across the country to find Kennedy and deliver some carefully chosen words and a bag of cement!

kneejerk

The byes have arrived! We all thought this was going to be cataclysmic. A seismic event off the Richter scale. And for those unlucky ones, it was. Some may have even been placed in restraints as to halt them from flying all the way across the country to find Kennedy and deliver some carefully chosen words and a bag of cement!!! (Totally not me or anything). Those of you who caught the lucky breaks and played it well, pat yourself on the back and read no further. Those who didn’t have back up, god help your soul. It’s time to knee-jerk!

The Legends

These legends will stick with you for a while if you had them, it’s the guys who stand up under pressure that we value most! If only the AFL players new it was the multi bye rounds… Anyway. Heppell (122) is a must have defender and probably one of the best 3rd year talents you’re likely to see. Why can’t Gaff (31) learn a thing or two. Waite (143) is going to temp a few people, don’t worry. He always does. I have ordered the hospitals to be on stand by because you can expect a sudden influx in the number of 3rd degree burns that will be filtering through! Great scorer though. Gibbs (123) finally rewarded his owners for persistence. Round 14 target number 1. Kreuzer (101) has done exactly what was hoped of him after Leuey went down. I like to consider these things a blessing in disguise. A sign if you like. Personally I’ve been $200 of getting Dixon in Round 6 and was forced to get Minson in over Nicnat last week. Working for me so far! O’Keefe (145) could be the POD of the season in the home stretch, don’t forget what he did last year. Keep a close eye. Hannebury (136) and Jack (130) are also becoming must watch midfield premiums and will need to be monitored come Round 13 trades. Nicholls (113) is another example that the DT gods do have hearts. How’s the timing! If you jumped on early get around yourself, he’s a R3/4 keeper. I use my words carefully when I say Swan (130) was back to his best. His best football, but not quite his pigging best. I have some incredible stats on him to come but I don’t think we can say the pig is back, however I’ll take his 260! How’s Macaffer (102) travelling! Soon to be known as “Cafdaddy”, he is quickly asserting his presence at F7 for me. Great cover! J.Selwood (132) took 1 step in redeeming his credentials for those who took the punt. If he can get back to form he is the bargain of the millennium. I could just say the decade and mean the same thing but let’s be honest, that sounds a lot better. Sorry, ignore that last comment. The bargain of the millennium has arrived! In fact I’ll just say baby jesus has arrived. Tom Mitchell (144) has been a ball magnet ever since he could kick a footy, in fact he could probably find the pill before he learned to walk. Now that he’s added ferocious tackling to the mix we have a DT god in the making. Probably the best second DT game ever played by a rookie (I do not include Barlow as he was 3 years older with VFL experience). If you don’t have him, get him. Once you have him, admire him. I’ve been a fan ever since I saw his name flash up in the DT database and I’ll soak it in for the rest of the year, you’ll never get him this cheap again! He’s nestled in my M8 spot nicely, great story!

The Sunday Chops

The bloody chops, what a time to show their true colours. Josh Kennedy (-) threatened us last week, then pulled the trigger this week. For some it was the killer blow. I escaped with a reprimand in Terlich, but others weren’t so lucky. Good old Saturday morning calfs. ****. If somebody can solve the JPK (65) mystery, let me know. Much appreciated. Sh*t head. Whilst not DT relevant Gaff (31) has a lot of DT coaches (me included) with egg in our faces. The WAFL is calling. Many people took the punt on Goodes (49) and in my opinion, this was inevitable. He doesn’t play the right role to dominate on a consistent basis like he used to, don’t touch him! Scotland (76) is past his best, consistent 80s are his go now. One year too many for those who grabbed the former Mr Consistent. Speaking of consistent, Stanton (52). Or should I say, lack of. He would have had a lot of coaches headbutting walls on Friday. Those who actually captained him will be calling the repair man this Tuesday. Doctors will also get a workout due to a strange influx of broken fists. Hibberd (55) had a weekend to forget but there is one man who has to take the chopping cake this week. That man is Robinson (40). He is being sent to the pits of DT hell and never coming back. I wouldn’t be interested even if he pumped out 5 consecutive 150s. After looking the goods pre-season he has me flaccid. That is all.

The Clowns

Yes I’m looking at you St Kilda/Carlton supporters. In fact I’ll let that slide, we all say unreasonable things in the heat of battle. To the well educated, supposedly non-bias football journalists, umpiring decisions wins matches! Hang on, no sorry. The other way around. 120 minutes decide a match. Montagna running into an open goal with 2 alone in the goalsquare should decide the match. Playing on in the goal square when you can have a set shot from 10m could decide the match. Not to mention Darling’s free against in the goal square which has to be seen to be believed. Just believe this, you’ll struggle to find a weaker free in the VFL/AFL’s 116 year history. Goes both ways! Just because the eagles benefited with ONE OR TWO dubious frees didn’t decide the game (That said we are pretty pathetic), neither did a moment in the first half cost Carlton. Moving on!

What we’ve learnt?

  •  20 on the field is probably the bare minimum if you want to field a full 18. Anything else and your fate is left in the hands of the DT gods, and they don’t take no sh*t.
  • In the words of Florence (She just got her words mixed up), the pig days are over. I place most of the blame on Bucks. Swanny tears until 3 qtr time, then heads up forward. No cheap +6’s there! He’s still yet to register a score above 130 all year… To compare he had 9 of them last year! In fact he hasn’t had a score above last year’s average all year!!! Then again, it’s hard to live up to your name when the bar is set above jesus.
  • The DT angels have a special stone ready to carve Tom Mitchell’s statue after he becomes the first player to average three figures over 10 years. *Gets out of time machine*. A bit early? Probably, but he is a DT gift carved from gold.
  • If you’re like me then you still have “Seven Nation Army” stuck in your head from Sunday. No Army will hold any active DTer back from trading in Tom Mitchell between now and Round 13. His % owned will give a fairly accurate account of how many ghost ships are out there… Unless your stuck holidaying in the slums of Africa, in which case good luck crying yourself to sleep for the rest of the season.
  • Still haven’t learnt why JPK is so sh*t, when it clicks you’ll hear it here first.
  • Donuts taste like the end of a season. It’s getting to the point where I avoid eating them at all costs, and yes I always delegate bakery duties. Can never be too careful! (This may or may not be a lie).
  • Just like many people stare confused as to how Thrift shop ever made it to number 1, I also stare confused as to why we get sucked into Brent Stanton EVERY YEAR! The allure of those 140+ scores is almost as strong as the allure to thinking we can actually rap.

This game sh*ts me

Ok even though I’ve gone into jerk for you blokes (Wow. That sounded a lot better in my head) I’ve actually had a very solid week. Late withdrawals always sh*t me but the best 18 system had me covered. We (mostly) avoided the SJ captain trap due to an unlucky head clash, so it’s not injuries. God damn even Thurlow stood up under pressure! This week the axe has to come down on the many underperforming premos this season. Guys like Zorko, Watson, JPK and Robinson have all had shockers on the back of breakout seasons. None were terribly bad picks but all of them would have got the red vest for me this week! Watson took the honours in my side and I’m sure a sh*t premo score took the vest for quite a few teams who managed to field 19+ players. Watson can get another reprieve but for the rest of them, their time is up! We pay 500k+ for proven quality, and look what we’ve been served up this year. A 60% strike rate. And that’s why this game sh*ts me.

The other bits and pieces.

*Pulls out riot shield* Now I know most reading here will probably be on the verge of tears as their DT season is taken away from them by the cruel new bye system we run under Demetriou, but I managed to snare another great total of 1964 this week. *Cue thrown bottles and abuse*. Maybe getting the sh*t out of my system early days has helped me out. Who knows. I’m looking at fielding 21 this week so here’s hoping for some more carnage. Don’t worry, you’ll get your laugh out of me in Round 13. Or as I like to call it, the end of the world. The Mayans were onto something! Cheers.

If you enjoyed my raging and want a hittable punching bag when sh*t goes tits up, follow me on twitter @MattCraigDT. My views are honest, mostly helpful and occasionally entertaining! Also hit me up with any suggestions for who you thought were the Legends, Losers and Clowns, plus what you’ve learnt the past week. I value everyone’s opinion!

Hovart v Martin v Nichols which two do I bring in? Will grab t mitchel next week or do I grab Hovart and t Mitch this week to prepare for byes but then miss Nichols and Kmart?

    • Deeyon

      June 10, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Do not miss Nicholls this week, you can’t afford to really. Hrovat over Martin due to JS I would say.

        June 10, 2013 at 10:57 pm

        +1
Rookie ruckman who can pump out a tonne don’t come along often (ever), get on board, I did last week

Reckon Martin has higher ceiling, perhaps equal JS (don’t think Pies are going to have many ins soon) but I’ll be taking Hrovat coz he plays r13

Griffen vs Barlow vs Cornes? I’m leaning to Barlow but for price. I’d love to have Griff in though as he is great to watch

        • Tim

          June 11, 2013 at 3:36 pm

Dwyer, Goldsack, Ben Johnson? No? A few to come in for WB, but they’ll be more interested in blooding youngsters rather than making sure it’s their absolute best 22 on field. Also, Hrovat’s had his bye Martin hasn’t, so unless you’ve only got 1 Rd 13 bye mid, I’d definitely be getting Hrovat.

          Completely agree on Nicholls.

  18. johnny fontane

    June 10, 2013 at 10:17 pm

i had jpk for 3 weeks at the start. I knew he was a stats machine but I never watched him play. after seeing him play 3 times I cut him straight away. he has no outside game whatsoever. he’s a strict contested ball machine. he never gets mark+kicks. it’s all quick handballs and tackles. he wil still produce in physical contested matches but don’t play him against bad teams or games that will turn into shootouts. which basically makes him non-dt premo.

  19. Aidan

    June 10, 2013 at 10:17 pm

    Lonergan > Hrovat
    Berger > Minson

    $244k remaining afterwards.

Will leave me in a precarious position though, with only 18 on the field for Rd12. However, I’ll end up with 19 on the field for Rd 13 (if all goes to plan of course) *knock on wood*

      • Tim

        June 11, 2013 at 3:46 pm

With a BE of -37 it makes waiting potentially very costly. Of course if he comes back in the vest he’ll be back to his current price in 3 weeks… so tough choice.

  23. Shags

    June 10, 2013 at 10:43 pm

Whats the deal on JJK injury? will he be out round 13?

    • Matt

      June 10, 2013 at 10:45 pm

Heard nothing yet but will monitor Woosha’s presser this week closely. Hopefully he becomes Martin for me anyway

    • Shags

      June 10, 2013 at 10:51 pm

Yeah, in a way it suits me. I’m trading him to Nichols and trading Scotland to Hrovat.

I have a full 24 on the pitch (Assuming no other injuries etc) and thats a whole wad of cash. i will have only 18 on the pitch next week, unless I decide to cull Danger, which is very possible.

Hanley or Ellis or Birchall pick one. Take into consideration value for money, vs the fact want to be a keeper.

    • Matt

      June 10, 2013 at 11:00 pm

6 week keeper? Beyond a few rounds once your team settles no one has to be a keeper.

    • Maverick86

      Maverick86

      June 10, 2013 at 11:01 pm

Not Ellis. Coming off injury, still prone to the vest, unproven if someone plays on him (though Hanley and Birch struggle with the tag). I learnt my lesson with second year players after starting with Greene, and to a lesser extent, Zorko

Hanley’s form better than Birch, so Hanley for me

    • tom

      June 10, 2013 at 11:01 pm

Mmmm has to be between Hanley and birch tbh as Ellis had a hammy strain b4 the bye so is 1 at risk of not playing this week 2 if he does play he is at risk of the vests, 3 could be a late withdrawal

Birchall could be rested later on in the season as the hawks sure up their team and rest players heading into finals , has a history this yr of late out

Hanley has a high break even not a fan of the tag which he got last time out ,( but won’t get tagged against free u would think

    • Blazers

      June 10, 2013 at 11:04 pm

Birchall for value and you’d think he could return to form soon at around 85+ average, maybe look at Hanley in two weeks after that 30 has gone out of his system

      • tom

        June 10, 2013 at 11:10 pm

Tbh I want to get both into my team , if that’s the case with u then it has to be birch first , the Hanley once he has that but score gone and he will also represent great value by then , that’s my plan lol…… Then bring in Hibbard

        • Shags

          June 10, 2013 at 11:15 pm

I think I will bring in Hanley next week :)

Hey guys, a bit of a dilemma in terms of trading over the next two rounds, assuming there isn’t any major carnage.
My intended trades this week are
Viney to Hrovat, Daw to Nicholls
Daw to Nicholls is 100% and I’m looking to go Laird to Mitchell next week but I was thinking of Scooter for O’Meara next week as well.
Do I keep Viney this week, trade O’Meara to Barlow and then go Dwyer to Scooter next week, or stick to my original plans?

    • tom

      June 10, 2013 at 11:14 pm

Ur first one makes the most sense viney to hrovat daw to Nichols

    • Stange

      June 11, 2013 at 12:29 am

No point in keeping Viney if he doesn’t play next two rounds.

Another option is to go Viney to Barlow, if you don’t care too much about Hrovat’s cash generation

    • D Day

    Scotland > Hrovat
    JJK > Nichols (via Roughie).

Trading two premos to two rookies what am I thinking?
Firstly I will have a ludicrous 24 players on the pitch this week, so four of my scores wont even count. I think Hrovat and Nicholls must have rookies.

I think Scoland has had it, he was a covering trade over the back carnage (how I love to whinge how it was supposed to be Stevie J $60k cheaper), i have too many round 13 premos and scotland is the weakest link.

JJK has injury concerns, and I dont consider him a keeper. WCE have a rough patch coming. Indeed I dont think I’ll even double upgrade next week…as I dont have Titchell.

next week I’ll grab a Hanley and Tichell. And the following maybe Stanton and Daniher (if hes on the bub).

    Good plan?

      Very good plan.

I have done the same this week, although for Currie and Viney.

Next week I will bring in the same too, and the following week will be looking to bring in Barlow (already have stanton) and Daniher. Did he look good ?

Good plan if u want the cash injection that’s wat I am doing this week I’m goin Berger to Nichols and Evan to hrovat

Who’s your 4th ruck? I’d be trading him to Nicholls straight up!

      • Shags

        June 10, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Hmmm yes, i have Rowe, who although he isnt olaying, his DPP link with Cox and Roughie is allowing me to put all my rucks on the field ove the MBR.

If i trade Rowe, then in round 13 i will have 3 playing rucks, meaning one has to sit on the bench.

ALthough in the long run, its probably best to cull Rowe,

        • Shags

          June 10, 2013 at 11:42 pm

The other thing is, ruck 4 is such a useless position, and having a useless player with DPP sitting there isnt in itself a terrible strategy IMO.

Like I said, JJK is injured, has a rough draw from here in, and IMO someone I eventually was going to trade.

Trading Rowe doesnt get me anymore points over MBR (one of nicholls or Blicavs will have to sit on bench next week)

            June 10, 2013 at 11:55 pm

Ironically, 4th ruck pretty handy this week!

          June 10, 2013 at 11:46 pm

Rowe > Nicholls gives you a playing Ruck, great ruck cover AND 80k. Way to go IMO…

It would appear that Hrovat and Nichols in this week will be a very popular double trade.

    • Savabeer

      June 10, 2013 at 11:40 pm

Would agree with Nicholls. Hrovat may have some competition with fallen premos though… Cotch, Lids, SMitchell, Redden all still avg 90+ and in some cases 100k cheaper

      • Shags

        June 10, 2013 at 11:48 pm

With the extra cash you generate from Hrovat, you can get a non fallen premo.

        • Savabeer

          June 10, 2013 at 11:58 pm

True. He did mention double trade though. If you pick up Hrovat and a fallen premo, no Nicholls this week for you.

have to get o haplin out – so it will be him down to nicholles and evans to barlow

Is there such thing as too stacked a midfield come round 14?

With my current trade plans i’ll have 8 mid premos (ostensibly, anyway with JPK, Murphy, and Priddis at tier 2 premo level) and Mitchell and Hrovat on the bench.

I’m pretty sure benching Mitchell would be a crime, so JPK sitting on the bench is a real possibility!

Not sure whether this is one of those ‘good problems’ or a misuse of cash.

      June 10, 2013 at 11:45 pm

And can someone tell me why JPK has forgotten to tackle?! 5 tackles in 3 games is really starting to piss me off.

        June 10, 2013 at 11:59 pm

There could be a case for playing Mitchell and picking up say a Martin after a price rise? That way we could pour more money into our defence ans fwds whilst making the most out of the obvious cash cows ATM.

      June 11, 2013 at 12:04 am

Sounds like a good problem to have. Nothing wrong with having a strong bench, especially come finals.

    This week I have done:
    terlich to birchall and either
JJk to minson, macintosh or roughed (cox moves to fwd line) OR JJk to roughed, Waite or any other fwds you can think of.
    Thanks

    • D Day

      June 11, 2013 at 10:50 am

      JJK to MacIntosh haha wtf.
Have you got Stevie J already?

      • Lachy

        June 11, 2013 at 1:25 pm

nope getting him in 2 weeks

        • D Day

          June 11, 2013 at 3:17 pm

tbh Waite could be worth the punt. If he can stay on the park then he will score well IMO. Will be a massive POD too.

This Week – Blicavs – Nicholls and O’Meara to Barlow.
Next Week – Crouch to Mitchell and Scotland to Hanley.

    • D Day

      June 11, 2013 at 10:51 am

Good trades although Crouch still has money to make. Do you have any other rookie mids to trade instead?

What do you guys think of these trades?

    Evans -> Barlow
    Jones -> Cotchin

After these trades, I still have $285,300 left over.

    Thoughts lads?

    • graham allen

      June 11, 2013 at 8:46 am

barlow yes cotchin no. J.Redden maybe??? seems to have found his tackling and ball finding abilities

    • D Day

      June 11, 2013 at 10:52 am

Good trades. Nothing wrong with Cotchin IMO. I think he will have a good second half of the year.

    Hvorat or Martin?

    If Martin = a 0 next week?

    • D Day

      June 11, 2013 at 10:54 am

I think Hrovat has better JS, but Martin has better scoring potential. It also depends on your bye structures as most people cant afford to bring in Martin because they will cop a donut. Mmmmmm… donuts *drools*

    June 11, 2013 at 11:02 am

what do people think about Blicavs and JJK’s chances of playing round 13? i need both of them to play if i am to avoid doughnuts next week

Has everyone forgot about Boyd is there something ive missed

486k with a low BE. Is Barlow a better option though ?

    • D Day

      June 11, 2013 at 12:26 pm

I guess its because he is a tad old and he has only had 1 decent game this season. Barlow is a better option for sure. Scores well, consistant and in his prime.
