Good Trade, Bad Trade: Round 19

Good morning! It’s the last week of the regular DT season! A pretty important week this week as coaches are either in one of 2 boats. Hanging on for dear life to keep their spots in the top 4 or 8 by preserving their trades, or making a last ditch ‘Hail Mary’ with their remaining trades.

Good morning! It’s the last week of the regular DT season! A pretty important week this week as coaches are either in one of 2 boats. Hanging on for dear life to keep their spots in the top 4 or 8 by preserving their trades, or making a last ditch ‘Hail Mary’ with their remaining trades to make the grade, and then find a rabbit’s foot shaped 4 leaf clover at the end of a rainbow for some luck in the finals….let’s see who the fantasy relevant players are this week.

Greg Broughton ($326,000 b/e – irrelevant)  – The man whose DT career is now officially over decided this week to figuratively and literally give us the finger, now having surgery on it which will end his season. Well we give you one back Greg! You are now on many a ‘never ever ever ever again’ lists and some ‘ I would still consider Shaun Higgins before I pick you again’ lists. Can you hold him as bench fodder for the rest of the season or do you need to trade to stay competetive?

Sam Fisher ($ 289,900 b/e 24)  – Once one of the DT kings of defense, Fisher has been pretty much irrelevant this season. Until now.  Other good points to Fisher actually playing is, he will make you $37k from the trade and give you good bang for your buck. Showed a bit with 79 and 95 in his last 2 and plays GWS and Melbourne in the finals. Gotta love the irony of this trade, trading out a plyer whose coach ruined his fantasy career for a player who the same coach made such a relevant fantasy player!

Tom Bell ($95,800, -79 ) The big blue rookie has shown a bit in the last 2 weeks, averaging 72.5, he is currently the most traded in player this week. While a good cash grab for Broughton, lets hope he stays in the team. It’s a bit of a coin flip if he stays or not, if the blues keep winning he may be pushed out for the experienced blokes(then again he could stay as part of a winning team?), but may stay if their finals chance are gone in the next 2 weeks. I hope you don’t have to rely on him playing.

Brent Stanton $407,000 b/e 132 Remember round 8? Ah, those were the good ol days! Stanton averaged 133 and cost  over $600k!  Fast forward 10 weeks and he’s lost $200k, 22 points per game average and is out with a hamstring strain for 1, maybe 2 weeks. Now he’s the most traded player out!

Marc Murphy  $400,200 b/e 76 I talked him up last week and he repayed me 113. The best value by a country mile around that price, this trade mayhave still been as popular even if Stanton was fit!

Dane Swan $603,800 b/e 89 – you will likely need 2 trades to get him in from Stanton but who cares? If you have any spare trades use them. the third most popular player traded in this week and the third most popular trade. Swan is the singular reason (by not having him) I am going downhill this year. My pride wont let me get him in.

My mate suggested I comment on Giles and his ability to continue as R2. Screw you Jon Giles. That is all.

Lance Franklin $511,500 b/e 163 – if you are like me and you have been super patient and held him for the past 3 games, you idiot. Anticipating Franklin was going to back this week, hoping he will be hitting his straps for the finals next week, it seems that he is likely to miss this week and still no guarantee for next week.  The 5th most traded out player this week, he may need to be traded if you are throwing the kitchen sink this week for survival.

Nat Fyfe $380,400  b/e 80– he’s back! and the 2nd most traded player in this week! returned last week and has hit the ground running with a very respectable 89 and has a very reachable break even this week. Makes a lot of cash out of the buddy trade and will give a similar output (actually, maybe more, as he is playing).

So are you throwing the kitchen sink and hoping for a ‘Hail Mary?’ this week? Is Nat Fyfe going to be your lucky charm? What do you want to do Greg Broughton?

Discuss it all here!

Great article. Anyone else think Stanton just needs a rest and that he might come back after this week and smash it?

Rambo im hoping so,as im unable to trade him out and wouldnt anyway..he is capable as we know.

I hope for all them peoples sake that trade him out he smashes everyone :) haha

nah, he’s a dud, doesnt stand up when the team needs him like watson does.
only goes well when bombers go well.
dont see bombers turning their form around with the amount of injuries they have.

  3. SLAVE

    August 2, 2012 at 8:30 am

I’m sure they’ll be rushing Stants back ASAP, but i’m absolutley sure the rest of the comp have caught on to the bombers game style.

Regardless of injuries, the bombers will have a hard time – and therefore Stants will have a hard time racking up cheap possessions like before.

Stanton has had a massive workload without zaha so he is probably exhausted.

Buddy hasn’t been ruled out of playing just yet, the club will give him a fitness test today and see. Definately not going to trade him though, with 2 trades left and J Elliot doing well!

What does everyone think of B. Ellis for Fisher? Fisher plays the demons, cats, giants and Carlton during finals, will give me $20k profit from Ellis too. Only thing is I’ve already made finals and can’t change ladder positions, so this trade would be purely for my finals. I also needed to do 2 upgrades in my DEF line, but i don’t know how much of an upgrade Fisher is this year.

Need some advice from the DT community. I am currently sitting 4th with a match against a fellow top 4 side this week. If i lose and 5th wins i will drop to 5th. I have 80k and 5 trades so not too many problems there. My question to everyone is if there are any trades i could make to strengthen my team and sure up top 4?

Def: Deledio, Goddard, Birchall, H Shaw, Lake, Carrazzo, Scotland, Darley, S Shaw

Mid: Ablett, Pendlebury, Boyd, Thompson, Selwood, Barlow, Treloar, Gibson

    Ruck: Goldstein, Roughead, Redden, Stephenson

Fwd: Franklin, Beams, Sidebottom, Robinson, Dangerfield, Martin, Zorko, Porplyzia, Couch

Hopefully some of Franklin, Sidebottom, Robinson are back but i have reasonable cover in Treloar, Porplyzia etc. Lake would seem the weakest link to upgrade and not having Swan is a concern but it is now fairly difficult to get him in.

Should i just back myself in with this team or look to make some upgrades?

    • MW

      August 2, 2012 at 11:18 am

I’d consider Suckling for Lake if you really want to upgrade. Won’t cost much and Suckling is way more relaible than Lake.

But TBH unless all 3 of Sidey, Robbo & Buddy miss (Sidey surely was only “rested” vs GWS) I think you should back that team in. I’m in the same boat sweating on at least one of that trio getting up, albeit I have top position in my league sewn up so don’t face the must win proposition…

    • IanB

      August 2, 2012 at 12:14 pm

With so many injuries and “resteds” in the fwds, any gain with 1 trade might be overbalanced by a fwd out. Also, even if back this week, how well will Sidey or Buddy actually score?

Something else to consider, how strong is your league leader and how strong will he be at finals wk 1 and what about team 8? You might be better off looking further ahead into finals (team 8 might be a basket case) and planning a stronger team for weeks 2, 3 & 4. I’m looking at trading ROK in for Buddy, even if he plays, as winning puts me at P1 for finals as it looks like p4 is out of trades and weakened – a likely win for me and only 2 matches ahead rather than 3 (currntly 5 trades also). If I was bound for 3 or 4 for then I would keep him.

    Ive gone HAIL MARY

Looks like you’re doing better than me. I’m still trying to deal with Broughton.

Best I can think of is
          Broughton out (at last)
Baguley transferred to def (currently in mid)
          Scott Thompson recruited into mid.

          What do you think?

        August 2, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Fyfe is Fyfe…hes a gun either way…89 for a return for being out for along time is pretty impressive. ;)

Price is a issue as i still want to have a chunk of money to get in Premo Ruck..probably leaning towards Mcevoy..Priced good ;:) May cancel the Robinson- to Beams though and get The ruckman before he goes up next week in price.

Hey guys any wise trading advice for a second year Dt’er leading into finals territory.
Team as it currently stands is
Backs: Deledio, Goddard, suckling,, birchall, Scotland, carrazzo ( darley, S. Shaw)
Mids: ablett, swan, jelwood, Stanton, Thompson, Gibson ( couch, L.Brown)
    Ruc: cox, Giles (Redden, Stephenson)
Fwds: Franklin, sidebottom , beams, Zorko, porplyzia, goodies, Martin (cloke, Paine)

I have 5 trades left and $49,800 in bank .
2nd place sewn up in one league, in the 8 by .02% in the other league ( must win !! )

Not sure on the likes of Stanton, franklin, goodes, cloke etc..
Any helpful advice would be appreciated
Cheers, good luck to all in finals …

Check out your opponent’s lineup pretty thoroughly. He may be looking at worse situation than you as from what you have listed you will not be eating any donuts.

Browne > Def/Scotland>mids to cover Stanton, then Cloke covers Franklin.

A lot of teams will be facing donuts and you may not need the trade. Plus you have cover for Cox who is looking a real chance to miss, which many won’t.

You may be in with a good shot to win without trading. That said with 5 trades in the bank you could do worse than Stanton –> Murphy if you decide you still want/need to add a bit of punch for this round….

    August 2, 2012 at 12:08 pm

    Nice article,

How many trades going into finals? I have 4, but Broughton sitting on the bench. I would hate to now use a trade on Broughton, only to need it later if a Premium goes down – this would be the utlimate irony.

I kept Giles hehe…But waiting for Ryder to come back. – risky?

    • IanB

      August 2, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Broughton’s price won’t change so keep him sitting there (he’s so good at just sitting there) until you need the cash. Unless you have a costly donut coming, a fringe player will about match his score anyway. You might find him a useful part of a double trade later during DT finals

How well will he score when (or whenever) he gets back. What about ROK. He’s scoring we’ll, is a DPP, and Ithink Sydney’s draw is better weeks 20-23 than Hawthorn’s anyway.

      August 2, 2012 at 12:41 pm

I think he was off for treatment to a shoulder last w eek but he finished out the game. Of course the cats were down on the bench from the ten second mark so he might’ve played on longer than normal. If he plays then he’ll be up to it as the cats have better options (Murdoch?) than to player an injured Christiansen IMHO.

been a DT trading dud this year…

    mummy – Hmac – Ryder – Jacobs.
4 trades just on my rucks.

4 trades i could do with very much right now as i have
buddy, robbo, stanton, jacobs, stevie j, sidey all with the big ‘?’ over.

was looking unstoppable in my leagues 13 straight wins in 3 of them and looking good in 1st spot…

now im struggling to make full team and have premos falling left and right.

    0 trades left as well…. FMDT…

sorry guys but i needed to vent.

hope there are some others that are in my situation.

    Great read JimBob.

    3 Trades & 118k in the bank.
Going Darley > Suckling this week to complete my team.

DEF: Deledio, Scotland, Goddard, Birchall, Carrazzo, *Suckling, Heppell (Clarke, S.Shaw)

MID: Swan, Ablett, Pendlebury, Boyd, Jelwood, Rockliff (Gibson, D.Smith)

    RUC: Cox, McEvoy (Redden, Campbell)

FWD: Beams, Sidebottom, Franklin, Robinson, Dangerfield, Martin, Zorko (Treloar, Hall)

Also would you rather: Suckling (Marty Clarke bench cover) OR M.Johnson (Darley bench cover)?

    Suckling – 2012
    Average: 87
    90+ Scores: 7
    Sub-80 Scores: 6
    Scoring Range: 31-127
    Upcoming Opponents: Geelong(71), Por(70)t, GCS(N/A), Sydney(75) & West Coast(93)

    Johnson – 2012
    Average: 86
    90+ Scores: 10
    Sub-80 Scores: 5
    Scoring Range: 42-113

    Thanks JimBob.

I have 2 trades and $168,000 and am holding onto 8th place by the skin of my teeth.

Deledio, Scotland, Suckling, Heppell, Carrazzo, S. Shaw, Spurr (Broughton, McInness)

Swan, Boyd, Ablett, Stanton, Priddis, Goddard (Gibson, Couch)

    Cox, Giles (Campbell, Rowe)

Sidebottom, S. Johnson, Petrie, Pearce, Lewis, Zorko, Goodes (Adams, Murdoch)

Im thinking Broughton -> Fisher leaving me with $200,000 but a dilema with Stanton. Trading him out for Pendlebury should ensure me a win and a top 8 finish but I’ll have $$ left with no trades, so I dont think its worth it. Im in trouble if Cox doesnt play but I think the WCE want him playing this week.

    What would you do?

You win this game by having more on-field scores than your opponent. Look at what maximises your on field score, even if you have some $ left over. Think of it as being similar to having an injured player on the bench.

Something to think of though – what happens if Cox is out? Does it hurt just you or all of your local rivals?

    Any advice guys?

4 trades left and stanton in my midfield.

Is it worth downgrading stanton to a basement price player then upgrading lake to waters to complete my defence? it will leave me with 2 trades left and also mean that gibson will be on the field. leaves me with enough cash to upgrade gibson so any mid next week and leaves me with 1 trade heading into finals.

Worth doing or just hang onto the trades and rely on a stanton return?

Interesting dilema of who to put on the field:

S.Shaw vs Ess OR Lake vs NTH

Sloane VS Ess OR Gibson vs WBD

I’m leaning towards Gibson and Shaw as NTH are up and about.

I’ll be going Lake over Shaw.

Lake is certainly inconsistent – but do you remember the whole half Shaw played without scoring a single point? He’s great cover but he’s not knocking any of my starting defenders off the field.

    Scored a huge 2479 last week :)
This week I look to hang onto a top 4 spot would be nice to have a win .

Def: Lids, Scotland, Goddard, Carrazzo, M.Johnson, BROUGHTON, Gram (, ellis* )

Mids: Swan, Ablett, Boyd, Scotty T, Mitchell, Jelwood ( gibson, j mac )

Rucks: Cox , McEvoy ( campbell, redden )

    Fwds: FRANKLIN, Sidebottom, Martin, Dangerfield, Chapman, C.Pearce , Zorko ( d.smith, a. treloar* )

My worry is I may lose but my team does look better than my opponents
only got 2 trades left :(

This week do I go Franklin > Fyfe and pocket 130k for my last trade Broughton during finals, or hold buddy hope he is back next week. He plays Syd and WCE in his last 2 where he only scored 71 and 76. Im worried Fyfe may get injured again.

My best 22 minus Buddy with Elliot covering is on the field this week. It doesn’t matter in terms of leagues whether I won or lose any of my matches.

I have 3 trades, and only 6K in the bank.

I am tempted to just hold all three trades for, potentially, three sideways trades from injured premiums.

I am also tempted to turn Marty Clarke into Tom Bell this week and put $140K in the bank to make shopping for the final two trades more fun.

My other bench defender is Sam Shaw.

I have 2 trades, with no money in the bank…

Do I trade in Tom Bell to free up 150, 000 cash to use on my last trade?

I could then turn someone like D. Smith into a premo forward, and I’d have very good cover on all lines.

If I don’t trade, i’ll have 2 trades but Bell would rise and would lose the cash making opportunity…
