The Sunday evening knee-jerk. Round 11 edition
Sunday knee-jerk time.. hows your round going? come vent in here!
Usually when there is a cyclone warning everybody starts sandbagging their homes and boarding up the windows, they do everything possible to make everything safe then sit… and wait for the storm to arrive. That was us this week… we planned everything for our teams to be perfectly stable for the byes then had to sit and wait til Thursday night for teams. Early in the week there were a few pre-gusts of wind… Pendlbury, Waters, Scotland, Lewis gone…there was small damage but not catastrophic. Come Thursday night there was an eerie feel in the air around 6.20….everyone knew what was coming, we just didn’t know how bad the damage was going to be. It was bad…Shaw, Horsley, Duffield, Bower also all gone, half the roof was peeled off, and the front window smashed. But it could have been worse; the guy next door didn’t even plan… I saw his dunny door sitting on the curb 3 blocks away and his house is now rubble. As the storm passed through all we could do was watch as it created more carnage.. Sandi, Zaharakis, Saad to name but a few. It seems all the players actually active this week have realised its a multi bye round for DT and have just turned up in half gear, just for sh*ts and giggles. All i know is when there’s a massive storm the first thing everyone does is huddle in the sports stadium and stick together. In effect all us DT’ers are together in this mess.. we are all going badly but we are doing it together, so i guess that’s a reason to smile. So how did you go…have you been able to sit through the bye damage so far this round or are you already in ruins? Lets knee-kerk!
In a week when legends have been scarce i’ve gone for a guy who has been flying this year; Jobe Watson (131). He now averages 115 for the year and has been an awesome pick up from the start. The writing was on the wall, last year he led the brownlow at half way before being injured. He has actually stepped it up another gear this time around and must be in the top couple of brownlow chances again. Being captain has forced him to take it upon himself to will Essendon along at times, and it reflects in his DT output. The great thing about him last night.. and this year has been the goals. He rests forward and always kicks goals to pad out his already decent scores. Being 190cm he usually gets a mismatch in the forward line and can take the easy grabs. His mate Stanton (89) may be fading slightly but Watson is going from strength to strength. Special mention to the other captain Joel Selwood(122) who keeps on keeping on.
The Sunday Chop
Obviously chopping in a multi bye period is similar to re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.. a bit of a pointless exercise but I’ve certainly got one guy in the gun. Nick Malceski (29) has frustrated many this year culminating in him being dropped last week. He made a comeback this week but only as a sub, scoring a score that will force a price plummet and make his price not even worth downgrading! I watched him closely last night from my perch at the dome… he just sits in no mans land ALL the time. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the emergence of Lewis Jetta (117) has ruined Malceski as a fantasy option. The balls that used to go to Eski to distribute are now getting flung out to Jetta to slice his way up the field. More worrying still Armstong (77) was able to slot right in down back and show a real x-factor there too. Sorry Eski.. but your days are numbered. Chop.
Loads of clown like scores this week… right when we needed them least; Gibbs (49), Kruezer (50), Robinson (68), Big O (26), SJ (60), Enright (45), Martin (68), Deledio (78), Ablett (61), Goddard (81), Redden (38), Suckling (68) Seriously.. if you had a team of these players normally you’d be in good shape. But in the MBR no siree! But i can’t really call them clowns, we all own most of them anyway so we all go down together. It may be a long bow to draw but ill call last nights umpire a clown.. not because we lost… (we probably deserved to lose anyway) Its just because when Dempsey marked that ball on the 50 and feigned his body out to the left then stopped….the umpire called play on thus rendering the game over. If that was Buddy.. that would have been the Buddy arc and it would not be play on.. may even have been 50! How does the umpire not know that Dempsey dosent have a Dempsey arc? What actually bugs me is that there can even be a grey area, it should be one rule in the book. Not a rule for this guy, another for other people. People wonder why umpires get a bad wrap… well if they just showed a tiny speck of consistency that’s all we really ask for. OK OK i know.. sour grapes.. and i’m taking the piss a bit…. just hate losing!
The this game sh*ts me
While we are in the byes i thought I’d have a bit of a sook. For all the time and money sunk into this game surely we could have had a better bye set up? I mean don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed the challenge of it and enjoy that it has made for loads of different teams and structures but i think I’ve thought of a fairer way of negotiating them. Why couldn’t we just have a ‘super’ round that goes over the 3 bye rounds? Each team plays once and they could have stepped lockout outs as the teams play their week. Has anyone else got any other ideas for VS to beat the byes next year? Post them here!
oh yeh.. and that’s why DT sh*ts me.
The other bits and pieces
People often say you don’t know how good you have it until it’s gone. I’m feeling this right now during bye time. Usually we have the luxury of a subs bench; this is a great safety net. It allows us to take a few hits and stay on our feet. But it’s easy to take it for granted. At the moment we are walking on a tight rope over the grand canyon with no safety new beneath us…. Every single injury or omission and it’s a critical hit! Every out is a zero… No questions asked…no wriggling out of it. We are in uncharted waters really…In times past we could rationalise a trade easily. If a player had a 2 week injury you would sub on a player, factor in those points and work out how many points down you would be overall… Generally it would mean you could hold. But now every injury is absolute… if you miss Pendlebury for 3 weeks… That’s 400 points… Gone. That’s 400 points that could let your mate back into the game…. We are told not to sideways trade over these weeks but there are times when it may work. For example I had Christiansen this week. That was a zero right there… I rationalised that if I traded him to Cloke I would make 50k and I’d be up on points in rd. 11… Their bye weeks are both the same on rd.12 so I wouldn’t be gaining or losing a zero. Then I move on for the rest of the year with Cloke instead of Christiansen. So what’s the overall gain? Clokes Rd 11 points. Worth it? I think yes… Even more so if Bundy misses Rd 13 as well. So the point is a sideways trade in this uncharted landscape isn’t always a sin. Anyone else made any ‘super’ trades this week or any in the making for next week?
So thats about it… the Sunday knee-jerk done for another week. Obviously we still have another game yet to play but we already know if we are having a stinker or not. 5 games is more than enough to get angry and knee-jerk about something. Have you got any Legends, Clowns, Chops or reasons why this game sh*ts you? Vent them out here! Also tell us how many players you have left and what your score is. I’m 1170 with 4 premo pies to come. Thanks captain Ablett and 2 subbed ruckmen totaling 64 effing points! .. 1600 if lucky!
What do we think par is?
By the way, here is a picture i think fits most peoples DT moods right now;
