The Sunday evening knee-jerk. Round 11 edition

Sunday knee-jerk time.. hows your round going? come vent in here!

Usually when there is a cyclone warning everybody starts sandbagging their homes and boarding up the windows, they do everything possible to make everything safe then sit… and wait for the storm to arrive. That was us this week… we planned everything for our teams to be perfectly stable for the byes then had to sit and wait til Thursday night for teams. Early in the week there were a few pre-gusts of wind… Pendlbury, Waters, Scotland, Lewis gone…there was small damage but not catastrophic. Come Thursday night there was an eerie feel in the air around 6.20….everyone knew what was coming, we just didn’t know how bad the damage was going to be. It was bad…Shaw, Horsley, Duffield, Bower also all gone, half the roof was peeled off, and the front window smashed. But it could have been worse; the guy next door didn’t even plan… I saw his dunny door sitting on the curb 3 blocks away and his house is now rubble.  As the storm passed through all we could do was watch as it created more carnage.. Sandi, Zaharakis, Saad to name but a few. It seems all the players actually active this week have realised its a multi bye round for DT and have just turned up in half gear, just for sh*ts and giggles. All i know is when there’s a massive storm the first thing everyone does is huddle in the sports stadium and stick together. In effect all us DT’ers are together in this mess.. we are all going badly but we are doing it together, so i guess that’s a reason to smile. So how did you go…have you been able to sit through the bye damage so far this round or are you already in ruins? Lets knee-kerk!

The Legend

In a week when legends have been scarce i’ve gone for a guy who has been flying this year; Jobe Watson (131). He now averages 115 for the year and has been an awesome pick up from the start. The writing was on the wall, last year he led the brownlow at half way before being injured. He has actually stepped it up another gear this time around and must be in the top couple of brownlow chances again. Being captain has forced him to take it upon himself to will Essendon along at times, and it reflects in his DT output. The great thing about him last night.. and this year has been the goals. He rests forward and always kicks goals to pad out his already decent scores. Being 190cm he usually gets a mismatch in the forward line and can take the easy grabs. His mate Stanton (89) may be fading slightly but Watson is going from strength to strength. Special mention to the other captain Joel Selwood(122)  who keeps on keeping on.

The Sunday Chop

Obviously chopping in a multi bye period is similar to re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.. a bit of a pointless exercise but I’ve certainly got one guy in the gun. Nick Malceski (29) has frustrated many this year culminating in him being dropped last week. He made a comeback this week but only as a sub, scoring a score that will force a price plummet and make his price not even worth downgrading! I watched him closely last night from my perch at the dome… he just sits in no mans land ALL the time. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the emergence of Lewis Jetta (117) has ruined Malceski as a fantasy option. The balls that used to go to Eski to distribute are now getting flung out to Jetta to slice his way up the field. More worrying still Armstong (77) was able to slot right in down back and show a real x-factor there too. Sorry Eski.. but your days are numbered. Chop.

The Clown

Loads of clown like scores this week… right when we needed them least; Gibbs (49), Kruezer (50), Robinson (68), Big O (26), SJ (60), Enright (45), Martin (68), Deledio (78), Ablett (61), Goddard (81), Redden (38), Suckling (68) Seriously.. if you had a team of these players normally you’d be in good shape. But in the MBR no siree! But i can’t really call them clowns, we all own most of them anyway so we all go down together. It may be a long bow to draw but ill call last nights umpire a clown.. not because we lost… (we probably deserved to lose anyway) Its just because when Dempsey marked that ball on the 50 and feigned his body out to the left then stopped….the umpire called play on thus rendering the game over. If that was Buddy.. that would have been the Buddy arc and it would not be play on.. may even have been 50! How does the umpire not know that Dempsey dosent have a Dempsey arc? What actually bugs me is that there can even be a grey area, it should be one rule in the book. Not a rule for this guy, another for other people. People wonder why umpires get a bad wrap… well if they just showed a tiny speck of consistency that’s all we really ask for. OK OK i know.. sour grapes.. and i’m taking the piss a bit…. just hate losing!

The this game sh*ts me

While we are in the byes i thought I’d have a bit of a sook. For all the time and money sunk into this game surely we could have had a better bye set up? I mean don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed the challenge of it and enjoy that it has made for loads of different teams and structures but i think I’ve thought of a fairer way of negotiating them. Why couldn’t we just have a ‘super’ round that goes over the 3 bye rounds? Each team plays once and they could have stepped lockout outs as the teams play their week. Has anyone else got any other ideas for VS to beat the byes next year? Post them here!

oh yeh.. and that’s why DT sh*ts me.

The other bits and pieces

People often say you don’t know how good you have it until it’s gone. I’m feeling this right now during bye time. Usually we have the luxury of a subs bench; this is a great safety net. It allows us to take a few hits and stay on our feet. But it’s easy to take it for granted. At the moment we are walking on a tight rope over the grand canyon with no safety new beneath us…. Every single injury or omission and it’s a critical hit! Every out is a zero… No questions asked…no wriggling out of it. We are in uncharted waters really…In times past we could rationalise a trade easily. If a player had a 2 week injury you would sub on a player, factor in those points and work out how many points down you would be overall… Generally it would mean you could hold. But now every injury is absolute… if you miss Pendlebury for 3 weeks… That’s 400 points… Gone. That’s 400 points that could let your mate back into the game…. We are told not to sideways trade over these weeks but there are times when it may work. For example I had Christiansen this week. That was a zero right there… I rationalised that if I traded him to Cloke I would make 50k and I’d be up on points in rd. 11… Their bye weeks are both the same on rd.12 so I wouldn’t be gaining or losing a zero. Then I move on for the rest of the year with Cloke instead of Christiansen. So what’s the overall gain? Clokes Rd 11 points. Worth it? I think yes… Even more so if Bundy misses Rd 13 as well. So the point is a sideways trade in this uncharted landscape isn’t always a sin. Anyone else made any ‘super’ trades this week or any in the making for next week?

So thats about it… the Sunday knee-jerk done for another week. Obviously we still have another game yet to play but we already know if we are having a stinker or not. 5 games is more than enough to get angry and knee-jerk about something. Have you got any Legends, Clowns, Chops or reasons why this game sh*ts you? Vent them out here! Also tell us how many players you have left and what your score is. I’m 1170 with 4 premo pies to come.  Thanks captain Ablett and 2 subbed ruckmen totaling 64 effing points! .. 1600 if lucky!

What do we think par is?

By the way, here is a picture i think fits most peoples DT moods right now;

Hit me up with any thoughts on twitter @adzman78

Ranked 298 and with 14 trades but amongst my players were Pendles, Horse and Scotland….suddenly 1 donut was 4 donuts.

So with 171k in the bank i traded out Scotland, Horse and Chris Masten (who was planned to get upgraded later anyway) and kept Pendles.

I brought in Mitch Robinson, Michael Johnson and Sam Mitchell

so far 1414 with Magner, Marty Clarke and Beamer to come.

BTW….by utilising DPP i’ve been able to make 3 trades (in a round where all the experts say not to trade) and it will only cost me 1 donut over the next 2 MBRs and i will use 3 more trades MAX

Be interesting to see what happens with the rankings this week.

Bad call. Everyone knows 211 is as injury prone as can be. Couldn’t have gone someone else?

Crazy weekend. Reading through this and the lockout thread, it looks like the 1,700-odd that I’m on track for should be a fairly good score. Can’t complain too much, I guess. Currently on 1,413 with Beams, Sidebottom and MWilliams left to play.

Only potential injury/suspension concern for my squad at the moment is the Buddy report but hopefully he’ll avoid punishment. I’ve seriously got to do something about Malceski and Kreuz, though.

Looks likw this round I’ll be getting around 1000 this week, crap score but I am all guns blazing for rounds 12-13 so bring it on
Is there going to be a partial lockout round 12 with the Thursday night game?

For me the worst part about these MBR are the Leagues. If your going for overall you can learn to survive with it, but if your just going for a league win these three weeks are chaos. I need Beams to get 110 to win, while any normal week i would beat him easily. Virtual Sports Should NOT of made the league games go through the byes.

Hope someone can see where i’m going, just woke up. :P

I’m a little gutted for you, adzman, since you (like me) have been planning since at least February for these rounds, and it seems to have come undone a little for you. Where’s the justice?

From hoping to have one donut this week and one next, I’ve now had three this week and will get two (at least) next week. Still hoping for 22 scorers in Round 13. So a minimum of 5 overall for me at this stage.

How is the damage looking for you in terms of total donuts?

    • adzman

      June 11, 2012 at 10:25 am

ended up with donuts from shaw, duffield, couch and darley. Malceski may as well have been a donut plus this week was my week with no premo rucks… had vests to redden and big o but on the plus side ill have my full rucks back for the next 2 weeks.

i think ill have 2 zeros next week then one the week later without trading…. IF no injuries.

could have been worse really… kinda happy with my score, dodged most bullets.

On the brighter side, today is a public holiday!

And my Pies are playing and I’ll be there to watch Dane (please play please play please), Steele, Alan, Travis, Marty and Marley (oh, and Jack) add to my meagre DT total! And hope Jamie gets the green vest, coz thanks to the superstar who vandalised my team, I didn’t end up getting him in and may still decide to prior to Round 13.

    Carn the Pies!

All things going well because I am in a few cash leagues and set myself for this round and round 13. I figure 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. Next week will be interesting though 0’s every where. Looking at 1750.

  9. DT Tragic

    June 11, 2012 at 10:45 am

So anyway… my tactic of bringing in Jack for the 2 weeks to get some points and collect on the 60-70k price rise to turn him into Beams has hit a snag.

Oh well, should get 30k out of him with the -35 BE he had, hoping next week he plays and kicks a goal or two.

im on 1431 with elliott and sidebottom to come

had selwood 118, riewoldt 136 and barlow tonne up, gave stanton the C, so gained a few on those who put gaz.

cant believe more people dont have nick riewoldt, in great form, had him since round 1, he never has a real stinker of a game and is their focal point

par will probably be 1150 with so many giving up rd 11 for rd 12,13 so should move up a few spots with 1057/18 with shitty ablet as CAPTAIN!!! but still have Clarke, Magner, Sidebum, and clarke left should push me up to 1400

  12. kev

    June 11, 2012 at 11:53 am

yiew thought i had stanton captain but must have reversed my trades and sidebottom is still my captain..still might still be an alright week or it could get even worse i guess haha

  14. Recall

    June 11, 2012 at 12:18 pm

So bit off topic but it looks like Demetriou wants to have 18 rounds of 9 games and 6 rounds of 6 games in 2013. So that looks like 2 lots of multi byes next year. So I imagine VS will have to look at a different approach. Apparently the players union want 2 byes per team in 2013. Just something to think about for next year

    • Slappers

      June 11, 2012 at 12:53 pm

gay…. with the MBR this year and talk of a 2x MBR next year will be interesting to see how many people keep playing DT…

      • Recall

        June 11, 2012 at 12:59 pm

True. Will be hard to take it seriously. Especially if they mix up which teams will share the multi bye for the second time. Will be impossible to negotiate and minimalize donuts

My head would explode with 2 byes. I wouldn’t be able to cope, so hope the brainiacs can come up with a simple solution.

Too much focus on bye strategy, and not enough on enjoyable team winning strategy.

Either come up with a fancy solution, or have no team comps during bye rounds.

        June 11, 2012 at 1:30 pm

might be a similar bye structure to last year… have 1 or 2 teams miss a round throughout the season…

What’s everyone doing with Hargrave and Marty Clarke? Are they both keepers or are some even trading both?

They are D6/7 for me at the moment but I’m thinking about trading Hargrave up to Carazzo in a few weeks (should only be about $50k jump) but keep Marty for a D8 for good bench cover. What do you guys think and what is everyone else doing?

    • Slappers

      June 11, 2012 at 2:18 pm

im in the same boat but have lake instead of hargrave.

i am thinking of upgrading lake to waters and keeping clarke as D7 or D8

but i like to upgrade both lake – waters and clarke – broughton

      • Chuck Norris

        June 11, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Both sound like good trades although Broughton might go back to shit scores when Fyfe comes back (I know rd 18 sounds far away but that’s around when DT finals start)

Although, there aren’t any great upgrade choices are there?

    • Megatron

      June 11, 2012 at 2:22 pm

If Hargrave gives me another 2 weeks of shit, I’m getting rid of him. I reckon Marty is a keeper, and can only be traded out if you have trades just sitting there.

      • Chuck Norris

        June 11, 2012 at 2:32 pm

Yeah, I think you’ve got to keep him over the bye rounds but his scores have been really down lately.

Hopefully he can gather himself again and pick himself up during the break and makes himself a keeper! Otherwise, he’s going to be traded out to Broughton/Shaw/Suckling in rd 14 (is there anyone else that’s less risky lol) or Carrazzo in around rd 17.

        • Slappers

          June 11, 2012 at 2:40 pm

            June 11, 2012 at 2:55 pm

Suckling isn’t in the greatest form though. He’s 68 yesterday completes a run 7 games where he’s scored a ton just once (which was against the Dees)

      Btw, great article Adzman.

It’s good to see some recognition to Jobe Watson, very underrated player both DT and AFL.

My only unique pick that worked (I’m looking at you Golby and Big Sauce Jacobs). He was a lock though, starting price of ave 100 but was averaging 110 before his injury last year and his goal scoring ability this year has given him a whole new dimension as well as his consistency.

I can think of three ways to do it better. for next year. I think whatever VS choose to do.. It needs to be similar to what is happening in the actual rules of game and fixture. Without doing something wacky.. 3 trades extra isnt really enough to compensate for MBR this year. I think we can all agree to that.

Especially in League matches when it just comes down to who has the most donuts loses. really takes the fun out of the game.. You should really be able to field a full side as per normal with the exception of late withdrawals..

    1. Have nominated subsitutes that dont cost a trade just for that round but can only be used for that round to cover a donut. And cap the amount.. to 2 per round – if you need to cover more donuts you will need to trade to cover. Substitue can only be equal or less of the player being subbed out.. Green/Red Vest. Nominated player out and nominated player in. I certainly wont sideways trade a premium, just to cover a donut.. to then maybe trade him back in anyway.. thats two trades.. for one donut.. dumb idea VS..

    2. Have a Finals DT type round for the BYE round.. where we get to pick new team with players who are just playing for that round. May or may not work.. It will add another dimension to the game. and get users back using DT who have given up on their team after bombing out of their league or using too many trades.

    3. Or Just giving us more trades and having no League/elimnator matches during the BYE rounds.. So instead of waiting 3 games into season, league and elimnator matches start round 1.. ?
