Golden Stubby – Round 2

The DT TALK Golden Stubby Award was created a couple of years ago and awarded on our live shows. This year, it is going to be an award voted by the fans after 5 players are nominated by the DT TALK boys and the DT community. Vote on the player who deserves to be awarded with the coveted Golden Stubby for their effort in the round prior.

The Round 2 Golden Stubby is up for grabs to be awarded on the Live Show this week (Thursday at 7:30pm AEST on this here website). I’ll take to Twitter (@WarnieDT) on Sunday nights to get nominations and we’ll whack a post up on Monday evenings as the normal time slot for you to vote for who you think should win the Golden Stubby!

This weeks nominations are James Magner for his two awesome weeks as the rookie of the year so far, Gary Ablett for his massive job as captain, Brett Deledio as one of the few defenders pulling their weight, Jonathon Giles as a lot of coaches second starting ruck or coming on for Mumford and finally Brendon Goddard as the second highest scorer of the round behind Gazza.

Magner is scoring at more then a point per 1,000 dollars. Ablett is scoring roughly 1 point per 4,000-5,000 dollars. Magner all day long.

Magner for just about confirming his Barlow of 2012 status.

And like Gazza – doing it in a team that is getting massacred

  3. Blake

    April 11, 2012 at 3:30 pm

Gazza… he is as consistant as they come. The magnet is impressive but Gazza is just all class

how can people vote for gazza and go past magner? yes gazza smashed it we all know that, but hes expected to get around 120 odd anyway and thats the price you pay for him. whereas magner is as cheap as chips and keeps up with the big guns, seriously have a look at yourselfs

      April 11, 2012 at 3:42 pm

It’s not an award for best value otherwise random rookies would get it. I say it goes to whoever of the more popular picks smashes the biggest score, especially if they were a captain option.

    • monkeybumcheeks

      April 12, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Yeah but he scored about 21 more than Pendleybury and 27 more than Swan who were other captain options.
He basically scored an extra 40-50 over people who chose one of the other two captain which is about how good my defenders are at the moment so he definitely saved me some pain.

Lids against the Pies backed up his 90 in Round 1.
    Both in losing teams.

    Gablett is amazing

I’ve gone Giles “when it counts”

This year I’ve gone the 1:1:2 setup for the rucks with Mummy, Ryder, Giles and Redden. At the moment I’ve been giggling myself silly reading all the talk of whether people who have gone 1:0:3 who are now deciding if they should play Redden or Giles given that Brogan is around the corner – and, Nic Nat and Cox will potentially hurt Giles.

For me, Giles is there when either Mummy or Ryder have a brain fart, which has already proven itself worthy.

So the award goes to Giles for me, and whilst my Magner, JMAC, Ablett and Greene are all doing well for me, I’m kinda expecting them to produce those numbers.

Giles, when it counts you did it!

Ablett, when your captain top scores for the round I think they deserve a stubby. He could not do any more.

gotta be magner, a rookie thats consistently scoring tons in a losing team? Has champion in the making written all over him

    • BOOMER

      April 11, 2012 at 4:22 pm

+1 Magner deserves it for sure! GUN!!!!

But it was a tough call…in the end I went with Gazza. Capt scores of 136 / 143 back to back…nothing can stop this bloke!!! I bow before SMJ in awe!

Ablett or Magner flip a coin
Probably Magner coz you expect ablett to go nuts.
Where Magner at 85k in a terrible side in his first two games gets two tons!
    Thats deserving of stubby surely…..

    April 11, 2012 at 4:21 pm

Beau Waters, because there just aren’t enough quality hits in the game any more. His bump was a cracker. He didn’t deserve a reprimand, he deserves a Golden Stubby.

Oh, and he went alright DT-wise too.

    • Whiskified

      April 11, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Classic bump, Waters is just a legend. Borderline suicidal most of the time, but still a legend. One of just 2 defenders for me to crack the ton

Do you boys think Gibbs’s may get a lock down role against the Pies? ‘

And also thoughts on Scotty Selwood? :)

  19. Chuck Norris

    April 11, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Definitely Gazza! Back to back 135+ scores as captain, worthy as anyone for the Golden Stubby. GAJ!!!

  20. Antipasto

    April 11, 2012 at 4:55 pm

In a couple of years time he will be arm wrestling Joel for the spot as #1 Selwood

Absolute jet. Not sure I’d put him in my DT at this stage though..

Magner with Ablett close second, Magner was in a losing team (by 108 points remember!) and was best afield for Melbourne as a second gamer! He deserves a well earned 6 pack. Im not a melbourne supporter btw.

Permacaptain: Gary Ablett junior. A new English word for inclusion in the next edition of the ‘Oxford English Dictionary’.

2 guys smashing it in teams that are getting flogged by quality opposition. Surely the hat can be passed around for a second stubby, can’t split them

  24. Sully23

    April 11, 2012 at 10:05 pm

No love for Lid’s, surely his performance was amazing against Collingwood? Gaz is a deadset jet but it’s a bit more everyday for that guy!
