Who are you going to NAB? – Week 2

Round one is half over so what have we learnt? In a DT sense we got proof that the big stars have stayed big stars but there seems to be a wealth of mid-price backs to tempt us away from a pure guns and rookies approach. So now we move to week 2, what questions do we want answered this week?

Round one is half over so what have we learnt? Well the goal umpires have new goal line technology but still refuse to use it, maybe if a player thinks there has been a mistake he could call a referral? I mean why would the umpire making the mistake want to admit it?? He obviously thinks he’s made the right call every time. Also the last touched out of bounds rule is more unpopular than Ivan Milat at a backpacker’s hostel, it needs to go pronto. The release kick up the line is all we have against the full press sometimes. With all these new rules and wacky match times it’s hard to get a good gauge on DT scoring. The fresh team won 5 of 6 games… it’s a definite advantage. Reece Conca got off more lightly than the captain of the Costa Concordia but he used the exact same defence “…….but I only fell into him!” Will be interesting to see how many people pick him now that he will be unseen again.  I also suspect the hairdresser down Subiaco way has been experimenting with acid; something needs to be done with a few of those shags. In a DT sense we got proof that the big stars have stayed big stars but there seems to be a wealth of mid-price backs to tempt us away from a pure guns and rookies approach.

So now we move to week 2, what questions do we want answered this week?

StKilda v Sydney v Geelong

St Kilda look to be an interesting case, a new coach with new ideals may change a few players’ fortunes. Firstly I want to see how Big Nick is looking, word has it he will have more help this year in the shape of Siposs or Stanley which will stop the triple teaming and could put those 2 youngsters in lights. Can McEvoy take the next step to premo ruck? Can Armitage or Steven establish themselves and break out? Will Cripps take a running back spot?, he has had a good pre-season.Gilbert stunk worse than a fart in the shower last year; can he get back into DT form? Will Milera or Saad be able to play alongside Milne? Big wraps on Ross already coming out of Seaford, can he play? Is joey looking good and is Lenny back in town? And lastly is Wilkes a Presti or a Goose Maguire?… Please tell us this weekend! As I said, loads to look at here.

Sydney are slowly changing into a DT friendly team. There are quite a few prospects here that need monitoring….we all know Goodes can play but how about ROK, is the extra year wearing on him? Will Armstrong take the backline slut role vacated by Kennelly? Will Mummy continue on from last year and prove to be premo? Or will he go back for the 22 sausage eating record? Can Parker or Rohan push on and break out? Rohan has been sizzling all summer. Can Walsh snag a spot after his international rules starring role and hurt the saints in the process? Mitchell will be gold, he just may be a downgrade target if he doesn’t play in the NAB.

Obviously Geelong has been DT gold for a number of years, will they be on the wane or will it continue? What questions need answering here? Firstly in the ruck… Is Big O doing it all? I suspect with the Injuries right now he may get a fair run at it. He still has to share with West i guess. I hear Scott wants to blood a lot of youngsters to try and turn over the list, will be interesting to see how Smedts, Motlop and Guthrie go if selected.  Somebody needs to fill the boots of Ling… will it be Hogan? And the Varcoe fill in, will it be Byrnes or Motlop?…. or will Christiansen get more middle time and break out? Is Hawkins ready to rip it apart or will he go back to being a goof?  Lastly I’m keen to see how Mackie performs; he could be value this year…. actually I suspect there will be a few bargains coming out of the cattery this season, in fact my number one smokey plays here..shhhhhh

Gold Coast v Melbourne v Brisbane

Last year’s goldmine GC back up for year 2, most of their players are now in awkward price ranges but there are still some offerings, what are we looking for? Hunt could be a sneaky back pick this year…. If he gets midfield time he should easily be able to crack a 60 average and make us enough money, he racked up 20 possies last week, big watch! Caddy looks another that could really boost his average if he is given a sustained run at it, I’ll be looking for some form from him. How’s Zac Smith looking? Is Taylor Hine ready to play? How about Horsey, does he look the goods? Will bock continue to play forward now that Warnock can fill his old boots? 4 goals on the weekend looked promising.  Hope they don’t win, I hate that song.

What are we looking for at the demons? The co captains are a big start.. I’m looking for Trengove to really break out, how’s he looking? How about Grimes, do we risk him being injured this early? Is he in the middle or off half back? Are Blease, Gysberts, Mckenzie or Strauss ready to take the next step? Will Tapscotts mega boot be used as designated kicker again? Is Watts roaming up the ground at will getting stats now that Clarke is home in the square? Finally are Couch or Magner doing enough to get the upgrade? To be honest, everybody in a Melbourne jumper looks the same too me… they are like lemmings or something, I hope somebody steps out from the pack.

How about Brisbane, what’s news there? I’d like to know if Adcock is playing in the middle and how about Hanley, is he on a wing yet? Surely the back spot will be for Docherty when fit. Are Green or Harwood ready to step up? Is Polec ready to sizzle like he threatened last year? And big Billy Longer, is he ready for games? The hawks didn’t want to lose lisle, keen to see how he goes also. To be honest, I don’t see a lot happening here; I’m only trying to find a lion for bye purposes.

Port v Carlton v Adelaide

Obviously it’s a bit of a wasteland at port but there could be a bit lurking…. Big wraps on Ah chee over the pre-season, he may not be ready but will be worth a look. Wingard is a lock all year but the price is tough to muster… he’d want to play good this week to keep on the watch list. Keen to see what Blee brings, he’s on my pine as we speak. Can Moore or Jacobs stake a claim for more middle time and DT points? McCarthy should play every minute…will he score enough? Lastly will Pfieffer do enough to get an upgrade and can Redden stake a claim to challenge Renouf? Few questions to be answered after all!

The blues should fly this year but I’m struggling to fit any in my side….what questions do I want answered this weekend? Well I’m keen on Lucas, eager to see how he plays… Judd won’tbe there grimacing his mouthguard like clubber lang… should be a bit of spare ball left to go around. Kruuuz has been flying; keen to see how well he goes. How about Watson, nailed down the back spot with that super boot? Is Bower back to his rebounding best? Is Gibbs really ready to ‘explode’? Even get a hard ball? Rowe and Mitchell seem to be injured…will have to wait to see them I guess. Lastly I reckon Tuohy could be a Smokey… want see what he brings this weekend.

Lastly we have Adelaide, what do we want answered here…. Is Brown much chop? Is Dangerfield in the middle yet? And Sloane, can he shoot the lights out this year? Jacobs should fly this year…does he still have red hair? I’ve got a no ranga policy….really keen to see Grigg and Kerridge, think one or both will play games this year. Will the porpus pop a shoulder putting his boots on?  Not much going on here really….. Just like the real Adelaide!

OK OK don’t knife me… I know you just had Tropfest and the fringe…. It really is a nice place.

So that’s about it, another bumper weekend of footy, another bumper weekend of scouting…. What are you looking for?

P.S this was written pre squad announcements

Gonna be looking out for Hayes, Saad, McEvoy and Grimes.

Btw anyone know why Dylan Shiel from GWS wasnt playing on the weekend and if he’ll be playing round 1?

    • McScoundrel

      February 22, 2012 at 8:23 pm

I heard that Shiel was on the moon getting his spleen removed via his achilles. At half time the boys from the academy all danced to Thriller but Treloar was not among them so he must be ready to go.

      February 23, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Indication (HUN article) was that he had his appendix out a wk or two ago, but also that he had rolled his ankle and was seen in a moon boot at Blacktown when GWS was playing Dogs and Pies …

I can just imagine all of you fools squirming to slot in Porpz and Brown and blah and blah.
I hope Brown and Porpz smash it this weekend so all of you can put them in position 4 and 5 of your pathetic forward lines.
Let it be known loud and clear, any coach that starts both Brown and Porpz will fail this year! For thyeth art thow shittest injury plaged tooleth in the world!

          February 22, 2012 at 10:40 pm

Rohan is the biggest red herring of the pre-season so far… and Brown is a lock. Remember it’s been his ‘courage’ that got him injured and if he scales that back a bit there’s no reason he can’t average 80+ again this year. I’ll take him over a tired looking N-Roo any day!

          • mordja

            February 22, 2012 at 11:28 pm

Please demonstrate the ‘couage’ that’s causes the groin and abdominal complaints JB has suffered from.

          • Benny

            February 22, 2012 at 11:33 pm

There’s absolutely no way that Brown is a lock… but pick him, please! 1 less person in the race for the car is good for me ;)

          • Magpie28

            February 22, 2012 at 11:59 pm

I’m willing to bet JB goes up in price early on, given 6 of his first 10 are at the Gabba, two of which are against GWS and GC. He also has Ess and NM under the Etihad roof. I’m not going to talk you into it… don’t pick him if you don’t want him. He fits my structure with the R11 bye though.

Good luck in the race to the car Benny. I’d rather see you in it than TKOL ;)

    February 22, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Good point about the fresh teams winning, too. There have been a few close ones, but there were juicy odds available about WC last week who’d added Cox and some other class players to a side competing against a worn out Freo side. Savvy punters could make a quick buck or two to fund Assistant Coach this year…

IF Hurley ends up at gws next year i will cry, another few years of staying in the middle of the compeition. I will also tear up the membership i currently don’t have.

Brown for me is a 30/70 chance of getting into my team.

Onto Porps, he’s higgins 2.0 instead of his hammys playing up every second game it’s his shoulders. He will have some good games where he kicks a few goals but ultimately he is not worth the trade you’re going to make come round 5-6 after he pops one of his shoulders. Save a trade while you can people.
Chance of porps coming into my team: 1/100.

I am obviously keeping an eye on porps but won’t have JB. Admire the guy, but can’t risk it if I have porps as well as grimes in the backs.

Not super DT relevant but Sam Blease will not play this weekend for missing a team meeting. Article on AFL website said ‘defender’ Sam Blease which surprised me as I always thought he was being groomed for a midfield spot.

Shame Armstrong not playing as was keen to see the role he was likely to play.

Really spewin that our site village has not sorted out Fox Footy for this season :( Reckon there will be a riot if it is not sorted before the regular season!

I just think it’s a misconception on your behalf Warnie and others who maintain the site. (err not maintain the site cus you guys clearly don’t even do that) Rephrase. Those of you who give input.

Why do we write for SC Gold? Because we were asked to. And shock horror, we play both games and have done since it started! Personally I’ve been pretty successful with a couple of top 500 finishes. Last season I could only sneak into the top 2000. But, we did it last year too mate… and we must have done an ok job at it. If you have issues with our content, speak to our bosses at Virtual Sports.

Sorry that you feel ripped off because you can’t see that someone can know something about either fantasy footy competition. It’s a bit like saying I can’t like cricket because I like footy.

      Ugh, go figure.

      • GrainFedBeef

        February 23, 2012 at 12:16 pm

I think what it shows is that the AFL does not put significant investment into DT and is fortunate that they can pull on the quality expertise of the boys on this website.

I signed up to $20 Gold package for DT partly for price projection information, but more so for the detailed news comments that the boys on this site contribute – to me, if some of that $$ (its only $20) ends up going back to support this site, fantastic.

What the AFL fails to realise is that whilst I am an avid football follower, I am watching more games on Foxtel because of my participation in DT comps with friends. Foxtel subscriptions = more $$ for AFL.

Therefore if anyone from Foxtel or AFL is reading this, do the right thing and sponsor this site directly. It is notable that since DTTalk did a content deal with DT/SC comps last year, the amount and quality of product on this site has increased significantly, to the benefit of all readers.

Why is everybody talking up Wilkesy as just a deep defender? If anything he’ll spend more time up forward. At Claremont, my WAFL side, he played most of the year up forward to support Chad Jones and kicked something like an average of 4 goals a game, including a brilliant performance in the grand final where he kicked 5 and got best on ground. Will play as a third tall behind Riewoldt and Kosi.

Hi guys, this is mostly aimed at the DT Talk crew, but if anyone else know’s the answer please reply.

I’ve seen the lads post articles stating % of selections by DT Coaches thus far, in the Assistant Coach section there is the “Own %” statistic but is this accurate?

There are some numbers there that don’t seem right – that’s all.

Is this where our champions on this website get their statistics from? Or is it a different section?

    • Warnie

      February 23, 2012 at 12:43 pm

We get those from the Assistant Coach – in “Player Research” and then under “Coaches Choice”.

As for accuracy… I need to investigate, but it might be on all teams including incomplete ones as 50% is about the most owned player… I will find out!

      • Alex's All Stars

        February 23, 2012 at 1:52 pm

        Thanks Warnie,

It probably is accurate, maybe there’s just one or two players who I thought would have greater ownership… Take Paddy Dangerfield for example – showing 0% ownership. It’s fair to say he could have 0.04% ownership with the stat only showing one decimal point but I thought to check to see where you fellas got your data from.

It’s a very useful part of the Assistant Coach, especially if you’re looking for unique picks.

    A few minor tweaks:
    Grimes or Gilbert?

Boyd and Rowe (4th ruck) vs Sloane and Hmac?

is Coniglio a lock ? or is it better to have McDonal and Hamton?

Not a definate lock but price at the same rate as david swallow (+inflation) last year and I for one I had swallow and he was a season keeper for me and was great bench coverage on I was fully upgraded in the mids.

Let me answer the questions about Port

Can Moore or Jacobs stake a claim for more middle time and DT points? NO
McCarthy should play every minute…will he score enough? NO
Will Pfieffer do enough to get an upgrade? NO
Redden stake a claim to challenge Renouf? NO

I am seriously considering picking up Jacobs as a POD. I think he will score approx 80 points per week of half back. Quite cheap ms with plenty of upside.

      McCarthy – pass

Pfeiffer – I don’t have much hope for him presently, but with a shortage of quality forward rookies I am hoping he will do enough.

Redden- with current injuries on the squad he could get some games. Can’t see him being a viable option though.

We will come back to the “Will Pfieffer do enough to get an upgrade? NO” after the byes and see how you went with that comment.

Not a bad team at all! As we know everyone’s teams will likely change between now and rnd 1, but its a solid start.

I am worried about Mohr scoring potential, and in additon you also have two other risky defenders in Hargrave and Grimes… I usually try and limit myself to one of these types per link (eg: one in defence, one in mids etc)

I like the ruck setup and will be going something similar myself.

The other area that needs work is your fwd rooks. Pfeiffer, Dell, Wlash and Dickson all need to prove themselves to get games, or be upgraded from the rookie list. I would do some further investigation here as there are some other more reliable options around.
