Deck of Dream Team 2012: Marty Clarke

Meet the biggest lock in 2012. His name is Martin Clarke or Marty to his friends. I’m his friend and he’ll be one of your best buddies in 2012. Priced at an average of just 28.5 after averaging 71.5 before he returned home to Ireland, Marty is shaping up as the safest DT picks this year.

Name: Marty Clarke
Club: Collingwood
Position: Defender
Assistant Coach 2012 Price: $141,500
Bye Round: 12
2009 Average: 71.5
2009 Games Played: 12
Predicted Average: 73

Why should I pick him?

Marty Clarke is an Irish born super star. Clarke joined Collingwood for the first time in 2007 to only play a limited number of games in his debut season. In 2008 Clarke shone with an average on 71.8 and backed it up the following year to average an impressive 71.5.

After 46 games with the Pies, Clarke released he had too many teeth to be associated with the Pies and returned to his homeland 2010/11. In 2010 Clarke helped his team ‘Down’ to the All-Ireland final, where they lost out to ‘Cork’. Yep, that’s what they call their clubs. Also in the roster they have Kerry and Mayo… no sh*t – no wonder he left.

So, Clarke now finds himself back with the Pies in 2012. Collingwood chased Marty! They chased him hard! Collingwood gave up its first-round draft pick to GWS for Clarke. This is the third year running Collingwood where has done this to chase a mature-aged recruit. So for the people out there saying ‘he won’t be in the best 22’ – think again, I’ll agree somewhat and say he won’t play the full 22 games… but he’ll play enough for a guy who is rookie priced at an average of 28.5.  He is the biggest and easiest lock of 2012.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

This is tough… cause there’re not many reasons. Out of Clarkes 46 games with the Pies he only knocked up 2×100+ scores (but he is pretty consistent). Collingwood have a reasonably tough draw as most of the good teams do as the AFL really look after the sh*t clubs… check this out

Collingwood play …. GWS (1), SUNS (1), PORT (1) – HAW (2), GEE (2), CARL (2)
Hawthorn play …. GWS (1), SUNS (1), PORT (2) – COLL (2), GEE (2), CARL (1)
Geelong play …. GWS (1), SUNS (1), PORT (1) – HAW (2), COLL (2), CARL (1)
Carlton play …. GWS (1), SUNS (1), PORT (1) – HAW (1), COLL (2), GEE (1)

This is one way you limit the amount of the much talked about 100+ point floggings! Tell me that’s not rigged!

Deck of DT Rating. JACK – He’s priced at an average of 28.5 people! He will average 70+. This is a no brainer… don’t be too creative and try to be too different here… he is a guy you MUST HAVE in 2012 and trying to talk yourself out of this will only leave in heart break.

Thanks Calvin. I thought this guy had dropped off the face of the DT planet but will definitely consider him now.

Before the official prices & positions were released he was a MID, ( m0nty’s FP,) & he was a “LOCK!”
So as a BACK, he is a LOCK LOCK LOCK!!!

    Great research Vin

Ahhhhhhh hate to say it but I think you’re right Vin!

I am a pies man and it cuts me up that we got this turnover machine instead of the Big Orrenson, who we could have picked up before Geelong. Clarke can run a lot. Amazing.

I also think that any champion back in the WAFL or SNAFL who is 23-26 would be better than a guy who talks funny, and youtube highlight real is made up of tackles.

But, just because he is a totally shit pick for Collingwood this year (please prove me wrong you Irish stud) doesn’t mean he is a shit DT pick. I have been trying to ignore him, after initially knowing he was a locky lock lock even as a mid.

Ahhh oh well, it’s time to jiggle the team again.

I would just like to state for the record I am having a sickie. Fuck yeah. How Australian am I having the Friday after Australia day off? I am a meat pie, filled with pavlova and beer gravy, being kicked through the goals.

You are dead on. Big long weekend. No trouble and lots of laughs. I even brought an old guy a beer who was a real character. I told him my Japanese housemate was the ‘Cannon man’ on one of the whaling boats. Luckily, it went down well.

I am starting to hear that Clarke has good disposal! I guess I just saw him turn it over a few times and judged the Irish bastard to harshly. I don’t mind if he proves me wrong!

I can think of a very GOOD reason not to pick him. He may not be selected in the 22 come round 1

Had since I assistant coach team picker opened and doubt it will change come round 1 short of him not being picked. Do have a sneaky feeling he will cop a vest in the first game too, but want to be proven wrong!

  11. Dr Bones

    January 27, 2012 at 10:34 am

I’d rather find someone cheaper who will average the same. Pass.

    • giants

      January 27, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Considering how cheap he is I think that is unnecessarily risky.

    • Kuruki

      January 27, 2012 at 4:05 pm

Malthouse gave this dude a big wrap earlier in the year. he said last time he was here, his heart was not in it. He was home sick and missing his girlfriend. This time round he is ready, more mature and he wants to be there . This shyt makes a huge difference. 80 avg imo playing gingerbread man out of the back. Locked.

    January 27, 2012 at 10:55 am

Maybe he wont play round 1 maybe he will play round 2 maybe he will get the vest in 2 and 3 .. but if you dont put him in round 1 you will have to waste a trade putting him in because by rounds 3-4 this guy will be averaging atleast 70 a game and quite possibly 80+ this means a tasty cow or a bloody good emergency for the rest of the year.

The question isn’t whether he is lock for your team, but more importantly, is he going to play on the field in your team. The main problem I have with Clarke is how long before he gets dropped from the 22 for poor disposal. Wont take much especially if the Magpies lose a game or 2 because of turnover goals to the opposition. He also seems a likely candidate to be a sub. NAB Cup will hopefully answer a few more questions.

‘The biggest lock of the year’ is also a big call. There’s a few guys by the names of Giles, Orren and MacDonald that come to mind that appear to be bigger locks for me.

He is in my line-up for now but that may change if a rookie really impresses in the NAB Cup.

Marty Clarke is an elite kick of the football. He is also capable of clangers, and there were too many of them at times, but don’t go telling yourself he can’t hit the side of a barn. That’s garbage. He’s a deadly kick when he’s on song.

    January 27, 2012 at 11:03 am

I’d rather someone cheaper….. WTF and save yourself 30k PMSL

    • Ridley U

      January 27, 2012 at 11:09 am

If that 30K means that you can get a Pendles or Swan or Murphy or Ablett in the mids then it would be very much worth it but it might be closer to 40-50K. Do that with 2 players in the team and there is closer to 100K to play with. It would depend on the make-up of the overall team. Why would you want $140,000 on the bench if you can have someone priced at less than $100,000 and still making you money.

dosent that thing have a use by date? its pre draft, delistings, retirments….. coach changes….

  15. Judd005

    January 27, 2012 at 12:16 pm

at 140k there will be better rookies going for 100k imo.
He is in at the moment but first gone if a rook looks like averaging more than him.

Damn you Calvin! I’d taken Marty out of my squad but now I’m looking to get him back in!
I’ll have to drop Birchall for either Broughton/Heppell/Houli and upgrade Wilkes.

    January 27, 2012 at 2:33 pm

@ Adzman it was valid then and its valid now… retirements, delistings only helps his cause.. Mick Malthouse wil be a better coach and judge of players than Buckley ever will

  19. Blunty

    January 27, 2012 at 3:59 pm

I don’t know about him getting a game. His got some talent sure but his poor ball use and pies strong list will make it hard. If selected round 1 I’ll probs fit him in. IMO he won’t be and might be an upgrade target if he gets a gig later on

  20. ncd2888

    January 27, 2012 at 7:37 pm

He will take leon spot in the side as the running back man that can take and apply pressure.

  21. Gozzie

    January 27, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Thanks Calvin, though I’m surprised by some of the comments here, as the concretes been dry on this one for a fair while for me. When he came out as a Def that pretty much sorted it.

The comments about looking for someone cheaper are a bit bizarre. 140k for someone that you know will average north of 70 (possibly push 80) is as cheap as chips. Those who don’t believe they can afford chips are going to struggle to find something cheaper with similar satisfaction guaranteed.

Job security in a strong team is the only question mark against him, when compared to say Ellis & Morris making their way into a much weaker Tiger’s back six. But, given the way the Pies pursued him, and Neon’s departure, you’d be as confident as you can at this point in the pre-season.

    Hey there experto’s

Just checking – by my calculations DT will be in partial lockout until the strat of the collingwood round 1 game. if correct this will give us plenty of time to move Irish to the bench if he is named a sub one hour before the game.. or even a quick restructure!

    • Warnie

      January 29, 2012 at 10:33 pm

Good man! Exactly what I was thinking. And at $140k, you can get a rookie (hopefully) and have change!

    January 31, 2012 at 2:45 pm

If the good teams are good enough they should be able to win tough games. I think its a good thing as it gets the top 8 teams in the right mindset for the finals
