Deck of Dream Team 2012: Buddy Franklin

What a wonderful morning…. I find that Santa has visited and he has stuffed a bag full of goals and DT Points in my stocking in the form of Buddy Franklin! So if you are dropping him in my stocking Santa, does that mean you have him in your DT as well?

Name: Lance Franklin
Club: Hawthorn
Assistant Coach 2012 Price: $503,000
Position: Forward
Bye Round: 13
2011 Average: 102
2011 Games Played: 19
Predicted Average: 105

Why should I pick him? Let’s face it, this guy is the best full forward in the competition.  When he is on, he can rip a team to shreds.  He can kick them from anywhere and can run up into the midfield if he isn’t getting a kick down forward.  And it is nice to watch the freakish stuff he does and have the inner glow that you know it is earning you DT points!

During 2011 he scored over 100 in 10 of his 19 games with a couple of massive scores of 144 and 142.  Those two came against Sydney and Port Adelaide.

Every time the Hawks go forward, they look for Buddy.  He can beat just about anyone overhead and has great pace as well so he will get the ball out on the flanks or even through the midfield.  He averaged 3.7 goals a game, so even rounded to 3 that is 27pts a game right there (3 for the kick and 6 for the goal), add on to that those that he sprays OOB and for behinds, that is a lot of kicks per game (he averages nearly 12 kicks a game, there is 36pts a week).

The Hawks draw sees them play Port Adelaide twice, but GWS and GC only once each.  Their first two rounds are against Geelong and Collingwood so this may mean he doesn’t hit the heights early, but given his price doesn’t change til round 3 and they play Adelaide in rd3 at the MCG he should be able to make up for lost points.

He shares his bye with other forward choices such as Dusty Martin, Nick Volt and Mitch Robinson, but other than that your Forward line should be pretty much all playing when his bye comes around.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?  Free Kicks and Suspension!  Whilst he didn’t miss heaps of games through suspension last year, he gets you a lot of the dreaded -3’s.  Last year he had an average of 2.2 frees against each week.  That is giving away an average of 6.7 points every game.

When he doesn’t have those large scores he can really go missing.  Last year he had a 55, 68 along with 2 scores in the 70’s and two scores in the 80’s.  So if he is off, then he is really off.  This is a bit of a concern, however, as most teams in the league will have him, it shouldn’t hurt you too much.  The only problem will be if you have made him your Captain that week, but since you already have Swanny, Pendles or GAJ in your team, Buddy shouldn’t have to wear the C at all.

Deck of DT Rating: Ace. This guy should be one of the first picked in your teams.  He will pump out some massive scores and will be on most teams, so if you don’t have him on those 130+ days, you will really be hurting.  He really the go to guy in the Hawks foward line so you know he will get plenty of service from his team mates.  Lock him in!

Hope you are having a great Xmas day.  Hit me up on twitter @pkd73.

This article has reminded me of why I love having Buddy in my team. Traded out Fyfe for him, hopefully that works out.

He arrived wearing nothing but a Xmas hat and a G-string, and holding a contract for the JungleMufffin’s 2012. Getting Buddy as my birthday present was the best thing I ever got.

I’m not gay btw, I just have a man crush on Buddwood.

    • Brappinalong

      December 25, 2011 at 1:47 pm

holding a contract for the JungleMufffin’s 2012, he had no hesitation in tearing it up for a more enticing and lucrative offer with Brappin’s boys knowing he will be part of the greatest Dreamteam known to man.

But still that hat and G makes the straightest bloke blush….

      • JungleMuffin

        December 25, 2011 at 11:33 pm

He probably took the offer knowing that he will get paid for a full season, but will only have to play half a season or so, as Brappin tends to throw in the towel fairly easily.

Buddy will be back for more success.

    December 25, 2011 at 4:58 pm

He’ll get injured, suspended and give away 50 free kicks in the first quarter but you have to get onboard the Buddy Train!

By the way is there talk that the Knife won’t be ready to play at the start of the season? I’ve got him locked in but I’m not sure what his current status is.

True definition of a DT nut – checking in on Xmas Day!

Only concerned he hasnt played more than 19 games since 2009 but with so many forwards showing grey hairs proabbaly goin with Buddy

I think one of Buddies hobbies is not playing rd 24.

One can only hope that Hawthorn is fighting for a top for position in rd 24, so that Alister doesn’t rest them all. Because of their resting policy, I’m not going Birchal but Suckling instead. Just a guess really at this stage but I think Birchal would be in the eight or so rested because of his importance.

        December 26, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Oh yeah and I’m a lock on Buddy, naturally.

    December 26, 2011 at 9:55 am

You’ve got me thinking. You said Gee and Coll in the first 2 isn’t such a concern because he’s up against Ade in red 3 and should make up for lost points – but have you checked his stats against the Crows?
I am a Hawks fan and I don’t recall, other than that awesome 7 goal performance in the 07 elimination final, a time where Buddy has carved the Crows. In fact, I’d say he rarely gets more than one or two goals against them.
Might think about skipping him for the first few rounds and grabbing him later on. Then again, I suck at this caper!!!!

    • GJayBee

      December 26, 2011 at 12:06 pm

Personally, I wouldn’t waste a trade. I could care less about Buddy’s price fluctuations, as long as he has a good season, he’s worth having from the start. But, if you saved a hundred grand that you used wisely, you could pull it off.

I would recommend watching the Krate Kid about eight times in a row before making the final decision.

    December 26, 2011 at 12:02 pm

You said it Dunny, Lock him in! Any inconsistency will be canceled out by his popularity. Who would dare go into the finals, or go for the car, without Buddy?

Who else run’s down the wing and makes a b-line for the tightest angle? As the angle tightens – his interest grows – so he is less likely to become bored and kick a point.

Watching the replay on the Sunday footy show, they were all laughing at the guy chasing Buddy as he had his four or five bounces. Buddy had this natural gait and this guy behind him looked like an accountant on a treadmill that was goingto fast for him. He could have fallen at any moment.

You have to love it when a fast player just looks at those around him and knows he can burn them off, the goes on a six bounce run and the crowd starts to roar!

Buddy, Fyfe, Martin, Zaha, Steele. It’s expensive, but I think I have to do it.

I’d like to fit Dangerfield or Duncan on the park as well. Both of them could produce porridge all winter thought, that’s probably why they aren’t actually on the park. They kinda suck and I know it.

    DT Madness!

    Merry Christmas everyone!

I can’t believe anyone would consider not picking him.

Of course he will give away free kicks and there is always the possibility of suspension, but the guy is a machine. Best forward on the list. He will average 100 plus.

At 25 this year is in the peak of his career in a very good Hawthorn side.
