Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 19

It’s a week off in the DT world for some… but never for a captain hunting pirate. After hours of study and research I have some rippers for you again this week as always. So get your butt in there and check out my Top 5 DT captains for round 19. Arggggg!

Sam Da Man

Sam Mitchell’s record against the Fremantle Dockers in amazing and when you add that to the fact that he is playing them at one on his favourite DT grounds in Australia, we have ourselves a potential captain for Rd. 19. Sam played these guys in Rd. 11 this year, that day he avoided the Crowley tag (who went to Hodge) and racked up a nice 129pts. Before that he has posted 102, 129 and 141 on the Dockers and should be great again this week. The last time Sam played at Patersons Playground was in 2009… that year Sam had massive scores of 147 and 141 and joins the huge list of superstar Victorians who love the space that Patersons offers.  He had a solid 113 (30d) last week and averages 123 in his last 3 games this year. His hand is up for your selection!

The Ultimate Germ

Yeah, he is. Leigh Montagna is one of the ultimate DT germs going around.  Last week, Montagna had 11pts at the quarter and finished with 117pts after a 55pt final term as he ‘germed’ it up when the game was all over red rover.

The thing I’d like to show you this week is what Leigh Montagna does to the sh*tter teams in the AFL compared to the better teams. When the game is over… Montagna comes to life and kills the dud teams. When the game is hard (against the tougher teams) Montagna has either spat it with his tag and given up or… given up.

Check out his average in his last 3 games against the following teams:

Top 3 Teams

Collingwood – 77
Geelong – 78
Hawthorn – 87

Bottom 6 Dud Teams

Bulldogs – 100
Richmond – 124
Adelaide – 100
Brisbane – 129
Gold Coast – ?
Port Power – 102

You’d expect most players would average lower Vs the harder teams, naturally… but C’mon Leigh! These numbers speak for themselves and with 117 and 124 coming in his last 2 games this year, look out for ‘Montagna the Germ’ to cash in this week against the young Suns.

A Few Good Men

Dark Horse… watch out for Joel Selwood who has had 110, 131, 105 and 120 in his last 4 against the Demons. But after a highest score of just 108 in his last 4 games this year… he’s due.
Swan Not Gone… He sits a little low on my top 5 this week as last time he played the Bombers he had just 24d for 104pts. Yeah he’s better now but the Bombers are his 2nd worst team and although he’s had 101, 148 and 130 in his last 3 at the MCG… I’m sceptical. I still think he’ll pump out a 120 but it does come with a little risk with them being his 2nd worst team.
God-Hard… Warnie might be, but Brendon Goddard this week should be very good Vs the Suns. Last week he had 73pts at half time Vs the Crows and plays a team who gave 6 Collingwood players 117+ scores last week. He is averaging 110 in his last 3 games this year and should be right up there in the best this week.

John Locke Him In!

Wow, that’s a little fancy… John LOCKE him in. Why not?

Scott Pendlebury has been in ripping form recently averaging 118 in his last 3 games this year and finds himself going for his 10th straight 100+ score this week.

Last time Pendles played the Bombers he had a massive 166pts and walked away with the ANZAC Day Medal in Rd. 5 this year. He had 34d, 10m, 8t and 3 goals that day and did it with a tag from Heath Hocking (good try). Before that game, Pendles had 134 and 97 on them in 2010 and finds himself at the MCG this week where he had 123 in his last game there and goes for his 6th straight 100+ score there in a row this week.

Last week, Carlton played Essendon and the Blues walked away with 5×100+ scorers as Mr. Big Daddy (Judd) had 34d, 12t for his 138pts, Marc had 118 and Gibbsy racked up a quiet 114 himself. So brace yourself for another ripping score from Mr. SP10 this week.

TWITTER TOWN – @CalvinDT for all the up to date stuff on captains.

great call, one of the most underrated DT’ers going around. Sure to score well seeing he managed a decent score against the saints last week.

    July 27, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Hey Vin, nice write up as usual. If this isn’t too much to ask, can you please include the stats of the no 1 tagger of the opposition of your top 5 players. For example, you could put in for Pendles: Essendon no 1 tagger is Heath Hocking, he has given his direct opponent an average of x pts in his last 5 and x times 100+ scores. Cheers

Well done Calvin, I especially liked the “john locke him in” part that made me laugh!! I’m going with Leigh Montagna this week as i think he will get 150+.

No mention of Dal Santo? I suppose he’s pretty unique but his recent form and playing a team that gives up a lot of points. However I notice after a mammoth score it seems players score well below average, is this just a silly thought or is there merit behind this?

    • MCHammerhead

      July 27, 2011 at 11:18 pm

I remember not too long ago GAJ got a mammoth score and then followed it up with a 175!
But that was sweet merciful after all.

    July 27, 2011 at 7:59 pm

i think nicky dal is worth a mention. 125 avg over last 5 and up against GC who we know leak some massive scores. good article though.

Im in the Elim this weekend. Teams have been slaughtered. Im missing 7 players, opponent is missing 8. Captain will probably win or lose the game. Decisions, Decisions. Im leaning towards God.

Tough choices this week! Especially with most of us having those top 5 awesome players!
Lucky its a league-free round so we can take a bit more of a risk!

Btw, dont you guys worry about a Hocking tag.. unfortunately he’s still gonna be out this week due to injury. :( Our next option is Howlett, who was sent to run with Juddy last week but being only a 2nd year player, lets just say its a good learning experience for young Benny.

Dont want to see this but Pendles and Swan might tear my Bombers apart this week.. especially with Daisy in doubt leaving more points for those 2 to pick up.

O theres also H.Slattery.. but I dont think theres an opposition player out there who’s too worried about having ol Hank trying to keep them quiet. :P

  14. Bdogger23

    July 27, 2011 at 8:59 pm

Will definetely be going Monty for something uniqueish..

Next week, who do you guys rekon i should play as my 6th and 7th forward out of

    J Riewoldt?
    B Harvey?
    T Mzungu?

On the gut feeling i would say Riewoldt and Harvey, but Mzungu may outscore Jack this time round….

    • Tigersinblu3

      July 27, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Jack and Boomer would be the better option but you never know, but isn’t that what dreamteam is about?
      taking risk
But have the gu as emergency for sure, just incase of a general.

  15. mtooler

    July 27, 2011 at 9:13 pm

I don’t have him, but I hear there’s this guy called Ablett that might go ok in the top 5. ;)

    July 27, 2011 at 9:55 pm

Any of you know whether previous years the brownlow favorites got rested before finals or did they keep playing to get as many votes as possible.

Tossing up between Penndles and Mitchell. It is forecasted to rain on saturday at Patersons but Mitchell is a magnet anywhere….tough choice

  18. blackandwhitenoise

    July 27, 2011 at 10:12 pm

looking for a good backman. money isn’t an issue.

Goddard, Gibbs, Delidio(bye), Enright, Puopolo, Heppell, Broughton, (Toy, McGovern, Hunt)

I’m thinking about sam fisher in for Toy, thoughts?

    July 27, 2011 at 10:30 pm

    Covering a few questions….

Nick Dal Santo – Good option and has form on his side and of course the fact that he plays the Suns. Not people have him to I try to cover the ‘main’ players… but imo, Goddard and Montagna will out score him… except if you are a SC fan (not sure why you would be) but he’d be in my top 5 in SC but this is a DT world in here and I have Mont/Godd ahead of him.

Scott Thompson – averaging 107 on Port in his last 3 coming off a 141 he had on them in Rd 4 this year. His form is solid averaging 108 in his last 3 and carries an average of 103 at AAMI in his last 3. Solid numbers but I think the other boys in my top5 there will be better…. but I’ll pencil him in for 111pts. But could be a sneaky good option.

Port Vs Bye Youtube Video – BLOODY GOLDEN… must watch!

Be Unique – its a week off league matches so roll with someone new this week. My team is that bad, I dont have Pendles or Sam…. so Montagna will be my boy this week. But I wish I had the others!

Any other questions can be sent to my directly in twittertown – @CalvinDT

    Thanks guys…. love ya work

      July 28, 2011 at 7:11 am

thanks Calvin. Those stats definately throw some questionable doubt in me locking in Tommo this week. Will weigh it up, as I have Pendles, Swan, Goddard, Sammy, Murphy and Boyd all in my team too… bloody nightmare!! You’d think the dons would do everything but bloody assasinate pendles to stop his freakish run against them this weekend wouldn’t you??

  20. PurpleArmy

    July 27, 2011 at 10:51 pm

crap!…dont have Pendles, Mitchell or Montagna

Goddard, Swan, Ablett or Thompson this week…hmmmm

    Ablett C
    Swan VC

Usual boring C and VC but MEH!…might change to Goddard

  21. Tigersinblu3

    July 27, 2011 at 11:31 pm

    Nice write up calvin :)
Ill be going Pendles as captain and give Dal Santo vice :D

No Gablett, took awhile to see his name not in the top 5 ;D

  22. edge

    July 28, 2011 at 10:42 am

i’m considering either boyd or cox

with the doggies missing so many players this week and boyd being a proud player, he’s likely to really pull his finger out (and i think he’s due for a monster score)

big cox is just in great form

like the secure environment that etihad provides

elim matchup this week looks winnable, depends how many trades he has up his sleeve

  23. Ike

    July 28, 2011 at 1:31 pm

Ok, you are being bit harsh on Joey…

Over the last two years v the Pies his scores were 51, 48, 105, 133 and 106. The sub-affected 51 was when he inured his knee in the first second of the game and his 48 was the second GF when everyone basically got smashed.

Last two years v Cats were 45, 99, 91, 128. The 45 was the game when he came back too early from injury – same injury which gave him his 51 vs the Pies.

Also, didn’t he smash up the Weagles only two rounds ago in the first quarter when the game was there to be won, he had something like 19 possies by quarter time.

And… the week before he only scored 78 against the bottom side.

Love your work Vin but I reckon Leigh deserves a bit better than that….

    • Calvin

      July 28, 2011 at 1:39 pm

ha ha ok boss I see… and understand where you are coming form… but you must agree with me that he always cashing in against dud teams and he can’t handle a tag as well as other preo mids… agree?

And will smash GC for sure right?

      • Ike

        July 28, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Yeah fair call, but there are bigger downhill skiiers in the world than Joey.

The good news for him I guess is that Dal is smashing it lately and he (or BJ) usually cops first tag when he is in form. Actually, Dal is probably one to talk about with form vs hard tags – he’d never get the C in one of my teams due to his ability to stink it up.

That’s the thing that makes Leigh so good in the DT world, he is more often than not let loose as the opposition can’t tag all of the saints mids.

There is a fair chance that Clint Jones will even smash GC so its a given that Joey will.

      • Devo

        July 28, 2011 at 2:48 pm

GC still don’t seem to tag very much, so there’s potential for Goddard, Dal Santo and Montagna to all go feral. I don’t see how you could go wrong with any of them as captain options this week.

  24. Hawksman

What are any of your thoughts for upgrade in forward line.

was thinking either Goodes Lecras or N. Riewoldt? leaning towards lecras as he is the only will who will play out of the three this week

  29. scottiemc

    July 28, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Boyd has a lowest score of 94 in his last 6 against the Weagles, fairly tempting….
