A line in the Sandi

With the big 211 out for at least another four weeks, it’s time for those of us who haven’t dumped him to finally draw a line in the Sandi. Let’s have a look at the options available to us.

Downgrading Sandi is a very attractive option. It frees up a stack of cash, which will easily fund your finishing-trades to complete your team. While there are plenty of non-playing rooks to downgrade to, if you actually want cover then you’re struggling. Here are a couple of sub-$150k targets to consider.

Matthew Lobbe $126,000 (Pt Adelaide) came in as a late call up last weekend and put in a huge 95 points to kick-start his DT career. He has been talked up at the Port and while he’s a little under-done, they are likely to give him a few games, so there’s some chance of cover if you downgrade to him. He’s a RUC/FWD DPP as well, so there’s added flexibility if you already have Petrie or Hale in your forward line.

Max Gawn $129,900 (Melbourne) has just gawn 3 games and had his first price rise, but the likelihood of a recall are poor with Jamar back on deck and Miller sharing the ruck load.

Valued at $379,500, Sandi can still get you almost any ruckman with 1 trade and a bit of cash. However, the stock of premium rucks is a bit lean this year. IMHO, the only rucks to replace Sandi are…

Dean Cox $402,700, average 111. Let’s be honest, most of us should already have him. If not, he’s the only super-premium ruckman by a mile now based on DT output. With a bye this week and Sandi’s price not fluctuating while he’s injured, you can wait a week to trade Cox in with a $23,200 spend.

Todd Goldstein $379,900, average 101. He has a bye in the first week of DT finals, so work out if you will have cover for him before pulling the trigger. If he fits your team structure, he will give you some nice, consistent numbers in lieu of Sandi. If he keeps up his current output to the end of the season, then he’ll have elevated himself to super-premium ruck status!

Ben McEvoy $383,900, average 93. Saints’ byes are all done, so if you have $4,400 in your kitty to cover the minor ‘upgrade cost,’ he’ll be a worthy keeper if he maintains his current form.

Drew Petrie $367,700, average 93. He’s come back stronger than ever after his freakish foot foibles last year, but falls into the same category as Goldy with a DT finals bye.

For those with finished teams or for those with plenty of trades remaining, another viable option is to restructure your forward and ruck lines with 2 trades. It will depend on your current team structure.

Trade 1: Downgrade Sandi to Matthew Lobbe or Gold Coast’s Joel Tippett ($114,400).
Trade 2: In your forward line, upgrade one of your cash cows or mid-pricers to Petrie.

As I mentioned, this really depends on your current team structure. If you already have Cox/Sandi/Smith, these two trades effectively have you keeping and playing Zac Smith as your second ruck, adding Petrie to your forwards as a premium keeper and allowing you to swap  Petrie into your rucks through Lobbe/Tippett if you need cover for one of Cox or Sandi. The risk (again) is a possible donut in week one of DT finals if one of Cox or Smith is unavailable and your fourth ruck isn’t playing.

Keep Him!

Of course, if you already have a solid ruck line and/or DPP cover with your forward line, you can save a trade or two and bench Sandi for his comeback in a month or so. Sure, it’s a lot of money sitting on your bench, but those trades are mighty precious at this end of the season!

To Sum Up…

At this late stage in the DT season, it’s all about making every trade count to strengthen your team’s balance and structure. Weigh up the pros and cons of each rucking option carefully and look ahead at all the remaining byes, especially the finals byes, to see how they will potentially affect your ruck and make sure that the trade(s) you pull don’t end up unbalancing your team.

Good luck!

Good article guys! My ruck is Petrie, Nic Nat, Sandi and Derickx, I bought in Lobbe last week with the plan to trade Nic Nat>Cox after the bye. Now i think I will cop the 0 this week and go Sandi>Cox next week, leaving me the dual west coast ruck line up with Lobbe cover and Petrie in FWD’s making Nic Nat the worst player in my best 22.

Thinking of going with Lobbe/J.Tippett. to free up $280k for finals…or i might just take the donut this week and ride out the Cox/Smith train until he returns

Just a quick correction… Martin is relieving Jamar and not Miller. He now plays for the tiges ;)

Right you are mate, nice pick up – I stand corrected. :-)

Sorry guys, another mistake in the Restructure section… The line “allowing you to swap Petrie into your rucks through Lobbe/Tippett if you need cover for one of Cox or Sandi” should end with “Cox or Smith.” But I reckon everyone gets the gist of it… ;-)

for some reason I forgot lobbe was dpp
    Sandi > Lobbe
then swap petrie in to rucks
after i get in callinan I will have so much money I will not have to do another downgrade

    Cox, Petrie (Z Smith, Keefe)
Johnson, Franklin, Pavlich, Fyfe, Sylvia, Riewoldt, Knights (Lynch, Lobbe, I Smith)

    his last 6 games: 106, 94, 100, 101, 109, 125

        Appreciate the feedback mate.

Painful though it is, with your all-star forward lineup, your hardest decision will be whether to play your ruck bench (Smith) or one of Knights/Lynch/Smith by being able to swap Petrie around. Nice…

      June 28, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Look at who he has played though. Kangas have a few tough games and I am CERTAIN his numbers will drop.

        June 28, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Have you watched the games? Petrie is a good player.

        • Danger

          June 28, 2011 at 10:54 pm

You serious?? Of course he is a good player. He has a huge dominance and crahes packs open with his attack on the contest. All I am saying is that, against a good defence he will struggle to take those marks and hence, not score as well. Also, and possibly more importantly, Petrie will not get as much supply and the better teams will apply more pressure on the ball carrier and therefore the delivery into the forward line will not be as good to him.

    My Sandi trade:
I have Cox, Sandi, Smith and Campbell as my rucks, however in my forward line I have Petrie. I was thinking of going:
Ulmitately my starting rucks will be Smith and Sandi as I need Petrie in my forward line. The Sandi to Lobbe trade is just so that Petrie can fill in for Cox this week and so that if needed Petrie or Lobbe can fill in for Cox or Smith throughout the season. This trade also gives me the cash to go Krak—>ROK and finish my forwards. Then I still have extra money in which next round I will go B.Smith—>DEF gun.
    A couple of things:
-Is Smith good enough to run out the season?
-Is 6 trades left enough (these trades included) too see out the season, even though my teams set?

    • marigoldman

      June 27, 2011 at 8:05 pm

6 trades?? You’re cutting it super fine there Warnie. Hope you can cover the multi-bye rounds and don’t have too many Cats, Pies or Hawks players who might be rested in the last few rounds.

      • Shaun Dawgs

        June 27, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Yeahh, I have 1 Cat, 2 Pies and 3 Hawks
        Is that a problem?

Eagles coming home with the wind behind them. Hawks and Pies looking over the shoulder for their position in the top 4. Only a brave fool will rest their players (except for cats). I can smell the fear……..ha ha

            June 28, 2011 at 12:19 am

y would u say Pies & Hawks and not mention Blues??? they may have just beat the blues, but they still have the position in the 4, and there get no where near the pies

            June 28, 2011 at 8:26 am

Didn’t mention Carlton as was not a reference in above comment and that they you are guaranteed of losing them for one week because of the bye (assuming that’s why not mentioned). Fair point though, however, Carlton will not be looking over their shoulder as Eagles will already be in 4th place by that time. cheers.

      June 27, 2011 at 10:52 pm

I’m thinking Sandi to Lobbe too. Big risk, given he may not be a walk-up start. If he’s named I’ll go Sandi – Lobbe simply to cover since I’ve got Cox out but after that I’ll probably start Cox and Petrie and just have Lobbe as emergency cover up front.

      • Shaun Dawgs

        June 28, 2011 at 9:04 am

        what about Smith?

  7. marigoldman

    June 27, 2011 at 8:02 pm

If Lobbe is named this week I’m thinking to trade Sandi out for him. Then I have Smith and Lobbe for next week and rely on Cox and Smith to play the rest of the year without injury/rests seeing as they have both their byes out of the way. If only Sandi had survived one more week!

    June 27, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I had been thinking of making the Sandi -> Lobbe trade, but was unsure if I should punt on having just the three ruckmen (Cox, Smith, Lobbe; my 4th ruckman is some no-name from Brisbane) or using some of the cash to get Petrie as a forward, mostly, but using him to cover for Cox/Smith if they are out (i.e. I would play Petrie in the ruck this week to cover for Cox). I guess all it does is push my intended downgrade of Darling/Krakouer to Ian Callinan back a week.

So I reckon Sandi -> Lobbe and a forward out (probably Darling or Krakouer) for Petrie will probably be the best result for me.

With Cox, Smith and Bailey I think I will downgrade Sandi to Lobbe, pocket the cash and complete my team. Bailey has been scoring well and looks to have good job security, and hopefully Smith can perform as a decent 2nd ruckman.

I’m lovin my Sandi to Lobbe trade two weeks ago – only wish I’d pulled the trigger earlier – I honestly didn’t expect him back before his bye.

The other trade I’m liking (despite the poor return this week), was Harris to Higgins. Means I can permanently move Petrie to rucks and bring in Higgins (or Smith) as my 7th fwd where Petrie was sitting. To think I was wanting to get rid of Petrie around round 6 or 7!!

I went Sandi – Petrie about an hour ago. Petrie has put up some awesome numbers recently.
I also went Bartel – Cotchin. Gotta be unique to give myself any chance of cracking top 1000.

    Team is

DEF: Scotland, Gibbs, Deledio, Suckling, Rawlings, Goddard, Heppell (Hibberd, Nicholson, Toy)

MID: Boyd, Pendles, Thompson, Swan, Ablett, Cotchin (Mzungu, Jacobs, Prestia)

    RUC: Petrie, Cox (Smith, Derickx)

FWD: Johnson, ROK, Sylvia, Goodes, Franklin, Higgins, I.Smith (N.Voldt, Howe, Richardson)

I have Bartel and my plan is to hold him until round 22 and trade him to either Shiels or Mitchell.
If he wants to trade Bartel fine, but make the trade an improvement and not a sideways (or backwards IMO) trade!!!

      June 27, 2011 at 9:49 pm

he may be a spud but he’s cheap and dpp. J. Tippett is a bigger spud…at least Lobbe has played a game which resulted in a 95…

prettyyyyy happy i traded him out straight away to A Browne.

hope smith and cox can carry the load for the whole season.

    June 27, 2011 at 9:11 pm

Was thinking of going sandi to lobbe. and then krak to pav/fyfe/cloke. But now im thinking it might be best to get Petrie in for krakour? My other rucks are cox, smith and derickx. Should i take the risk and have lobbe as my third forward and get in pav/fyfe/cloke for krak, or would it be best to get in petrie for krak to make sure i have good cover?

    • TeeTee

      June 27, 2011 at 9:50 pm

It depends… If you need to bank some cash, the Sandi downgrade and Pav/Fyfe/Cloke upgrade makes sense. However, it’s always nice to have cover. It just depends on whether you want to spend the extra on Petrie to cover in the ruck, or if Lobbe will suffice.

As far as Lobbe’s JS is concerned (as a playing 3rd ruck for cover), we’ll have a bit more of an idea when teams are named on Thursday night.

      Tough call…

      • SlightHawk

        June 27, 2011 at 10:03 pm

Yeah that’s what i’m thinking. If Lobbe gets named this week then he should be alright for third ruck. Letting me get in Cloke/Pav/Fyfe. Thinking maybe cloke, unique, no byes and i already have broughton, and gu. Yet Petrie is not too bad for an upgrade as well, but finals bye isn’t good. haha decisions, decisions.

  20. CrimsonRaven

    June 27, 2011 at 9:36 pm

Dont have Sandi, but with Lobbe getting unexpected games, ( he was going to be playing SANFL reserves before the call up) I might trade him in for one of my forwards, free up some cash and then swap him into my rucks for Petrie so I can play him on the field there and run with a Cox/Smith combo for the rest of the year.

Smith is easily better than any of my forward bench players and is seemingly wasted on the pine at the moment with Cox and Petrie playing so well. Obviously would have to wait till after the Cox bye, but otherwise even with bugger all trades left this seems like a good solid trade.

      • Sully23

        June 28, 2011 at 9:05 am

No worse than picking up Higgins! He’s only $300k and will be back this week most likely.

        • Blue boys

          June 28, 2011 at 9:42 am

Thats exactly my point, wouldn’t get Higgins either……..there would be about 15 blokes ahead of him IMO.
If you wanted someone from Bulldogs, Gia would be a better bet!!!!

          • Sully23

            June 28, 2011 at 9:59 am

I would get Jolly in my team over both of those bulldogs. Jolly isn’t injury prone, hasn’t missed a game in the last 5 years barring his recent surgery and Collingwood wouldn’t bring him back if he wasn’t ready.

          • Blue boys

            June 28, 2011 at 10:17 am

I agree, Jolly has had a great record re injury (or lack of them).
Knee injury affected Josh Fraser’s game badly in 2009/10 too. Can become real issues.
I don’t have Sandi, so don’t have to worry bout it too much thankfully.

  26. umberumberka

    June 28, 2011 at 12:16 am

The Sandi dilema is an interesting one and just another DT twister that is thrown up that needs to be discussed.

If you are going for a league win he could probably sit on your bench for another 4 weeks if you have structured your side correctly throughout the season and you are in contention, I would keep him. Back in round 18 ready for finals, a couple of games and back into the 100’s. If you have been less than diligent in structuring your rucks then you are going to pay the price. Maybe a sideways trade will keep you in you league race! If Jolly comes back this week he would be the best selection. $300,500 with a B/E of 65, you could do worse. Last game 100+.

Going for the overall win is a different story. Sandi must go. With Cox, Smith, Bailey and Petrie the choice is obvious. Lobbe in as DDP. He can sit on either of the pines, ruck or forward as I have good cover in the forwards and DDP in the Centre/Forward.

Trades at critical level; will have cash to upgrade 1 forward and 1 back and hope for the big ride home.

Sounds good, as did trading in Didak to my forward line last week!!!!

    That’s DT!

      REad above comment re Jolly.
At this stage of the year you don’t want to be trading in players with injury concerns, trades critical at this time of year and there is NO doubt Jolly will miss more games this year IMO.
Wil be interesting decision to keep Sandi too, Freo will have to reduce his workload when he comes back and ease him into finals where he will go flat out. So expect lower scores when he returns too!!!

Glad I traded out Sandi a month back – don’t think I’ll be getting Sandi next year for DT sadly.

Dean Brogan set to announce his retirement today…. Lobbe’s stocks just rose significantly, they’re gonna want to get game time into him and now they have no other option but to do so.

sandi to lobbe for me than gives me cash to upgrade puopulo to fisher, knights, darling or lynch to a premium forward and golby to birchal or suckling after round 17 leaving me with 1 trade left after round 17… and before any1 says anything i do not give a toss about league wins just going for highest overall i can get..

    My rucks are:

Sandi, Cox, Smith, Tippett, Petrie in the Fowards all from Round 1 for this scenario (was intended for West Coast and Freo byes as pre season thought Smith would pump out 40’s.

My plan is for this week: DPP swap Petrie with Tippett and therefore play the smith Smith/Petrie combo, then next week DPP them back so I play Cox/Smith.

So what I hear you say! Nothing ground breaking there. I think the key to this whole thing is DT Finals – all of them.

Think about it. (I can only go off my structure, but i know a lot of them are the same) ….. If you have Petrie in your forwards and have the link ,either already or trade one in this week:

    Week 1 DT Finals:
North Bye = Petrie on pine therefore you will need that extra premo Forward everyone has been talking about (Pav or ROK for me) or you will be playing a Howe/Gu/Lynch/Knights/ISmith/ie non premo.

    Week 2 DT Finals:
Geelong Bye = Stevie J or Chappy (hopefully you dont have both) so again you will need the extra premo forward or you will be in the same situation as above playing a non premo fwd.

    Week 3 DT Finals:
Cartlon Bye = For me i have avoided the lure of Murphy and Judd as this is the most important final. I will have an extra premo forward on the pine with both Petrie and Johnson back.

So here is the important part, all going to plan, i will DPP Tippett with Petrie and play Petrie over Smith. Getting my premo forward off the bench.

Have no Essendon fwd/mids either so same in GF.

All depends on whether you think your worst forward (in my case NVoltd) will out score Smith. I think he will.

Sorry for it being so long if you got this far. So this plan says Trade Sandi, or you will have someone like Nick Riewoldt on you pine in Weeks 2 and 3 of DT Finals with my structure. Only down side is that Smith will have to be your ruck in Week 1 of DT finals, and your opponent will prob have him anyway.

    Just a thought.

(Note: Going on #’s of teams that have Petrie (90,023) and Johnson (45,244) and Chappy (92,644) which you can see is a lot.

Its all good in theory mate, i have similar idea……….but you watch what will happen, Smith will pump out a 100+ and Petrie/N.Roo will get 60’s.
But you have to have a plan!!! Good luck. :-)

many people thinking of not trading Sandi? He should be back in time for finals, so im thinking save those precious trades for then

      June 28, 2011 at 12:31 pm

Yeah I’m not going to trade unless completely necessary. Have a decent amount of cash (130K) which will and when I downgrade Curnow to Callinan in a few weeks I will have enough cash for 3 upgrades which will well and truly finish my team and leave me with 4 trades.

When Sandi first was injured, my rucks were Sandi, McEvoy, Bailey & McCauley.

Was gonna trade Sandi for Cox, but then McEvoy got dropped, so I traded McEvoy for Cox and played him and Bailey, with Sandi waiting on the pine.

Anyway, McEvoy was a late replacement that week and has since killed it and screwed me over! dammit!

Five trades left, thinking of grabbing Goldstein or Petrie (can’t bring myself to bring back in McEvoy!)

Gotta love DrDT, latest column he is bagging those that held on to Sandi saying they should have traded him out when he was first injured, yet 6 weeks ago he told everyone via his column to hang on to him. PhD in pure crud

Is it silly to trade in a ruckman who is cheap but has job security, even if I have to pay more for him and he’ll score shit?? This will just give me cover if Cox or Smith happen to be out and give me enough money to make my final upgrade before my team is finished. Other ruckman is Gorringe.

      June 28, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Your best bets there are Tippett, Hale or Belchambers. Best JS there lies with Hale since Roughy is gone for ’11 but won’t score big often. Belchambers is your best chance at a solid backup but depends on how long Hird persists with the three big men. If you’re planning on playing out the year with Cox and Smith, Lobbe if named will free up cash and cover Cox for the week, good chance to play out the year since Brogs has announced retirement

Current rucks I have are Cox, Sandi, Gorringe & J Tippett with Petrie in the forward line.

I am going to to trade Sandi to McEvoy (down to 10 after that) and hope Gorringe can sneak back into the side this weekend. If Gorringe is not selected I’m shifting Petrie into the ruck.

J Tippett is just there for the DPP link. I haven’t read anything to say he’s anywhere near to getting selected.
